Dude, I live in Mississippi and have never heard any of that brought up. Wth? Must be your Cali snobbishness coming out.

Not originally from California. If you do not believe my statement concerning discontent for the poor and disabled in places like Mississippi, then look around for wheelchair ramps at places of private business in your town.

Bet you have never seen one before.

Yeah, I remember the parts where Hanks is stoned nearly to death by necks in beat up pickup trucks with rebel flag tags and when he is exploited to death by being duped into enlisting after college without having the cognitive ability to realize what he was even joining.

I also remember the part where Jenny is a child and her drunk father in a trailer home wearing a wife beater beats and molests her. That was one of the most depressing and horrific movies ever. It really exemplified the region and times, and I have met so many wife beaters and womanizers down there.

Don't get me wrong, the southerners with hospitality and salt of the earth character are some of the greatest people one will meet in this country. You know, the ones like Al Gore, James Carville, Jimmy Carter, John Edwards and LBJ. They were/are all pioneers and brave individuals who stood up against social injustices and amoral exploitation of the have-nots in society.

re: Who Is Who Here?
I believe that people should have the right to own a gun. I don't think people should have the right to own assault weapons. I believe that welfare recipients should have to perform some kind of work for the benefits they recieve. I don't thinkg that our government should be providing corporate welfare. I believe the more money you make, the more you should pay in taxes. I believe in term limits. I believe that the government should stay out of our religion, out of our bedrooms, out of our wombs and out of whatever drug I might choose to smoke. I believe that our military budget is outrageous and should be significantly cut. I also believe that our veterans should get the best treatment money can buy. I beleive that the current salary for any and all elected officials should be cut in half. I believe that elected officials who commit malfeasance in office should get the death penalty (as a deterrent).

You tell me what I am.

I have been a registered republican since I turned 18 in 1988 and voted R in every election except for Duke-Edwards and this past election cycle. When I get a round to it, I'll be changing my party affiliation to Libertarian.

You're probably the most rational individual I have seen post here thus far. I happen to agree with everything you mentioned above.

They won't because nobody wants to waste their vote.

re: Who Is Who Here?
I've only recently begun to post here, after lurking for a short time. In all honesty, I was expecting this board to be heavily-slanted to the right. What I've read, however, indicates people who perceive and debate the shades of gray, rather than taking the conflicting black/white views spouted by the media at face value. And that's the way it SHOULD be.

Who am I? Registered independent- Fiscally conservative and socially (mostly) liberal. I don't think there's much difference between Dems and Reps, other than the fringe groups to which they cater. I tend to vote for third-party and people who have never held office before. Definitely not a diehard Obama supporter, though I can't really say that he was much of a step down from W.

People who use the word "statist" past their Sophomore year in college will not leave their parent's basement until they are "cut off" and physically removed.

This guy.
quote:

I don't know this message board OR I notice liberals fake acting independent?
Sure, there are some on here who do that, but the term "liberal" is thrown around as an insult too often on here when someone disagrees with someone else's position. To be expected though.

Personally, the best way to describe myself is probably classical liberal. I tend to lean libertarian on nearly everything, and I am also a realist.

I don't care for emotions in politics and I absolutely despise "feel good legislation." I feel sorrow and pity for those suffering in the world, but outside of those I immediately interact with, I truly don't care. And from that stems my dislike for the large central federal government.

I'm expected to care about someone in Seattle, Chicago, Atlanta, etc., but I don't know them, nor do I expect to ever meet them. Why should I care?

Some would see that as cold and selfish, but I see it as nothing more than a realistic approach to our existence. Why should I care about someone I'll never know?

And that is why I believe in smaller, more local governing bodies. One size fits all legislation should be used rarely.

Now what do y'all think of Scruffy?
