In the south honoring the memory of true American heros in the south who opposed the treasonous bastards like Lee and Jackson? Those monuments are few and far between but the monuments to traitors are very numerous. Southern unionists and freed and escaped blacks who served the Union and those brave southern whites who refused to take up arms against their nation are every bit as much a part of my southern heritage as traitorous scum yet no one seems to care that the vast majority of people n the south weren't secessionists and did what they could to remain loyal to the USA. Why do we feel the need to remember those people in our past who were not committed to the United States but easily forget the truly honorable? Having a monument in your town honoring the memory of Robert E Lee is as asinine as having one honoring Benedict Arnold.....they are equally dishonorable men.

Why are you so hostile and angry towards a group of people that have been dead for 150+ years? What is your emotional connection to the civil war that it leaves you so angry and bitter. Let it go man, the war is over.

It is a pretty topical question....why is southern heritage only about treason when there is just as much history of southerners being true to the USA? My family came to the south some 200 + years ago and I would be much prouder of my ancestors had they been unionists than if they had been traitors......

To be perfectly honest I assumed until a few months ago that most southerners were Rebels....I honestly did not know that the majority were loyal to the union or indifferent.....there ain't a lot of discussion about it....it is pretty widely viewed as southerners were all in on rebellion when it simply ain't so.....

Yeah, I've read about a few counties who remained loyal to the US. And of course the Southern regiments in the Union army.

You wouldn't know what honor and duty was if it bit you on your penis.

Reading a little on it now. Over 100,000 southerners in the Union army and every state but SC had at least a battalion. 40% of Virginian officers sided with the Union. Pretty fascinating.

Also this song:
quote:

Yes and there were Union men who wept with joyful tears,
When they saw the honored flag they had not seen for years;
Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers,
While we were marching through Georgia.

That I do not know. But what I do know is that the Saban statue is a symbol of oppression. The Monroe DA told me so.

Also, simply because you believe in the Constitution, the way it was written by the Founders, to maintain strong state governments with greater powers than the federal government, doesn't make one a traitor

so you think that honoring traitors is asinine yet you expect people in the south to honor those who betrayed them?

If combatants who Lee, Jackson and Beauregard faced in battle didn't see fit to prosecute them as traitors after the war, what makes you so sure of it now?

Who the frick do you think you are?

Other than not having an understanding of the term treasonous, you make a good point. We agree. Monuments/memorial to that aspect of our past are underrepresented. That should be changed, as opposed to tearing down existing art.

It isnt treason. The South didnt commit treason. They lawfully seceded and then were invaded by real traitors to the US Constitution.

No my friend that is what a monument to a Lee or a secessionist is, a monument to someone who betrayed the south.
