Going back to the OP. I couldn't stand Nelson Rockefeller. Glad Nixon got the nomination over him. The term "Rockefeller Republican" now is called 'RINO.'
I was extremely impressed with Ronald Reagan's speech at the Convention and much preferred him to Nixon.
The more interesting convention was the Dems. For those of you not old enough to remember the details in real time the dominant issue was the VN war and that was TOTALLY on the Dems. Kennedy started with advisers and then LBJ blew it up.
In today's media I'm sure they could have blamed the whole Vietnam thing on Eisenhower and LBJ would have stayed in the race and won.

Kennedy stole the 1960 election.
And yes, I was pretty happy Nixon got the 1968 GOP nod. But I didn't get to vote for him because I was 19 then, and back in those days you had to be 21 to vote. I cast my official first Presidential vote for him in 1972. Haven't missed one since.

During that time, I never really bought into the propaganda relating to "the threat of Communism" or that we were fighting "to win over hearts and minds".
The only thing I really cared about was a president who would deliver us from the land of Hu Flung Dung (Vietnam). Nixon was the one who talked the talk and eventually accomplished that.

I was 11 at the time, so remember a good deal of it. The Dems were in total chaos as was the country. My Dad was glad Nixon won, so I guess I was too. My extended family, however, were Wallace supporters, as was most of Louisiana.

It wasn't surprising at all to me as a 19-yr old political junkie. Nixon was elected to the House at 33, to the Senate at 37, and to the Vice Presidency at 39, then lost by a hair in 1960. He looked strong during Eisenhower's medical incapacitations, during his many foreign trips and showed a certain tenacity that offset Humphrey's weak persona.
A two-term former VP against a sitting VP (who was nominated by default)after the withdrawal of another former VP - don't see that every day!
Those were my SDS anti-establishment days, by the way, so watching the election results coming in that night I experienced the ultimate "lesser of two evils" lack of emotion.

That's a GOP myth because Nixon would have lost to JFK even if he had won Illinois' electoral votes.

Same here but my old man says said Kennedy stole it. I believe him. Democrats are crooked and Kennedy's dad was the mob.

The "1968" episode of the Sixties on CNN had a good bit on the convention.

I think what OMLandshark is getting at is that by today's standard all sexual intercourse is considered rape of a woman.
