The consensus is that invading Iraq was the wrong course of action. Perhaps the consensus is that some kind of containment of Saddam Hussein would have proved better for the USA, in the long run.

What should the USA have done, foreign policy-wise, after 9/11?

Is the consensus that deposing the Taliban in Afghanistan WAS the correct decision?

Or, perhaps the USA should not have bothered to depose either Saddam or the Taliban.

What should the USA have done after 9/11?

Wiped Afghanistan off of the map and NOT used Pakistan to do it.

Told SH that if he even so much as sneezed wrong or impeded UN inspectors his arse was next.

And the most important because their hands were all over it is to have told the House of Saud that it would be a cold day in hell before the US or any of our allies bought another quart of their oil.

Kill every member of Al Queda and the Taliban.

And that's it.

Sadam's little games were annoying, and nothing else.

All resources devoted to finding and killing OBL and his team.

Not arbitrarily invade random countries. Switzerland, North Korea, Tanzania, Peru or Iraq for example.

"Munich", "Nazi Hunters", "Inglorious Basterds" type infiltration/covert ops/assassinations. With drones. Lots and lots and lots of drones.

If you mean: Done everything that we did, except for the invasion of Iraq, then, I say that's a fair and reasonable position that may well be the best answer.

The USA was already suppressing Saddam and working to contain him, so, I assume that you had no problem with those actions.

I'm not going to argue in this thread for any position, because, I want to gather in all clear thinking from others as food for thought for myself.

GWB: "Yes, this is President George W. Bush calling. I'd like to speak with Mr. 'Mohammit Omar'."

MO: "Speaking."

GWB: "Mr. Omar. I'm really disappointed in having to make this call, but these fellas - 'Usama Bin Laddin' and 'Al Kaydah' have blown up some buildings over here, and I understand they're under your protection. Let me offer you this - turn these fellas over to my people at the Pakistan border in 48 hours. Or else."

MO: "Or else what?"

GWB: "Exactly."

Despite the gaping wound brought about by objects as benign as boxcutters, they should have had perfect hindsight and divined that, despite a vast majority of various countries' intelligence agencies saying Saddam had WMD and his posturing as if he did, he in fact did not as so many on here with no responsiblity for national security think they should have.
