They hacked into our machines ?

Because if you are talking about administrative IDs being stolen etc., that wasn't directly done by the Russians. The background of the hacker that sold identity information has zero affiliation with Russians according to CIA and FBI so far in the investigation.

Not a fan of his politics at all.

I admire his strength. In a world of weak willed beta males, he's an alpha.

Definitely not to be blindly trusted and someone who should be kept an eye on.

Ideally should be an ally wherever possible.

Europe is screwed because radical Islam is inside each country. Russia protects itself and her interest. They are a natural ally.

There are millions of islamists in Russia.

There are less than 2,000 where I live, in the Baltic States.

There are few in Poland, Slovakia, Finland, Czech Republic.

You are throwing everything into one barrell without thinking.

And I repeart, there are millions of Islamists in Russia.

Islam is the second most widely professed religion in Russia. Islam is considered as one of Russia’s traditional religions, legally a part of Russian historical heritage.[2] According to surveys, the percentage of Russians who consider themselves Muslim ranges from 5% to 14%, the majority of whom are Tatars.[3] According to a poll by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center, 6% of respondents considered themselves Muslims.[4] According to a Reuters news article by Robin Paxton, Muslim minorities make up approximately 14% of Russia's population.[5]

No, I don't trust him in the sense that he will have anything more than his personal interests in mind. He's mostly an authoritarian thug and mafioso.

My one hope for good relations with Russia under Putin is that he's big on promoting the Orthodox Church as a part of Russian nationalism. This is a double edged sword.

On one hand, I think the global politic of the near future will largely be shaped by the struggle of traditionally Christian versus Islamist actors. For this reason, national identity that professes to be carved from Christian ethos makes for a natural ally in Russia.

On the other hand, it is worrisome to see Putin push all other Christians away, other than those who are part of the state church. And by push away, I mean passing laws that make it illegal for them to even meet in a home to worship. Unfortunately, this is in keeping with his nature of oppressive control.

Not really.

OTOH, can the US "trust" Merkel?
Not really.

We can trust other leaders where their national objectives align with ours.

Now, is Putin probably less likely to abide by an agreement with the US than is Merkel? Yes.

Is Putin probably less likely to abide by an agreement with the US than are the Chinese?
No.

Russia still remains the most significant potential military foe we face. We certainly should keep that in mind.

TPOS.

But he's (unintentionally) doing us a favor in Syria and we need to let him. If we're smart we'll back off that situation in exchange for a favor somewhere else.

As the leader of a world power? I don't trust him for one second.

I think you underestimate the threat that other Christian religions pose to a stable Russia. Historically Russia was much better able to govern Islamic polities than deal with either Christian, Western, or Judaic ideologies.

I 'trust' Putin more than Obama. Has Putin made any public declarations which were bold-faced lies. "red line"..."you can keep your doctor"..."Benghazi video"...et al.

Obama is a bigger threat to the Constitution which he swore to defend and promote than is Putting. That is truth!

Yes, for the last 8 years we've proven that we can deal with a Communist. And Putin doesn't lie as much as Obama.

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

Russia is a large and powerful country. It would be better to work with them than to practice knee jerk opposition.

Besides, they are a large market and trade with Russia would be beneficial to both countries.

And them Russian babes are hot.
