Why do republicans win the latter in most elections, and democrats win the former by double digits? Aren't they somewhat the same thing?

Nothing. Both kid themselves about politics.

Independent means you don't belong to a political party.

Moderate means you're a Cuck.

A ton of independents are stealth Republicans and have been since the end of Bush 43. They're not moderate, they're far-right and think most Reps are sellouts. They don't vote for Dems but will stay home if the Rep candidate doesn't dish enough red meat.

On the flipside, a lot of independents are stealth libertarians too embarrassed to be associated with the comedy show the current iteration of the party portrays itself as.

Not really. If you ask loaded poll questions and squint real hard it can look that way and you can get some Reason/Cato clickbait, but voting rarely bears this out

That makes sense but why have democrsts won "moderates" in almost every national election?

Is it democrats who don't call themselves liberal because the word is dirty?

An Independent simply does not identify themselves with either major party.

A Moderate may identify with a particular party, but political views are closer to the center of the political spectrum than most in their respective party.

The left does a great job of redefining terms. If you don't agree with their increasingly insane ideology as it continues to morph into things more and more inimical to the Constitution and the Western civilization values it embodies, then you are a "far-right-winger."

There is really no such thing in their mind as a moderate or independent. You are either on board or you aren't.

Looking at the term objectively, a moderate is someone who is willing to compromise and may operate in the tension of ambiguity. A non-dogmatist. And an independent usually possesses those qualities and is willing to cross party lines in furthering them and thus doesn't register with one or another.

This reply will elicit a bunch of reflexive jeers, but: Because they're the more moderate party.

They've been the more moderate party since... I'm gonna say after McGovern.

The less you give a sh!t about the labels people put on you, the happier you will be.

Independents have no allegiance to either party, but may or may not have very radical views to the left or right (see Donald Trump, or arguably, Bernie Sanders).

Moderates may be independent or partisan but their views never seem to go too far left or right. Their ideas seem to always be fairly mainstream without much controversy.

I'm 38 and up until about 2-3 weeks ago I've been a lifelong Independent in Louisiana. When I saw Gallot and some sneaky political consultants took advantage of some legal maneuvering to create an Independent Party of Louisiana, I realized I was a part of something I generally despise.

Party politics by their very concept create and foment tribalism politically speaking. I am not one that likes labels and I dislike being required to adhere to hard and fast ideological rules as a general rule. Having said that, I am consistently conservative and lean towards the right in terms of the ideologies I support with respect to who and what I want my government to be led by and organized around.

When I saw that the IP was created in Louisiana, I immediately changed my party affiliation to, "No party." I'm pleased with Trump's election and I am pleased with not being affiliated with any organized Political Party...
