I know they are part of a long list that many of you really don't know what they mean. They have just become synonyms for people you don't like or understand. I actually applaud OP for admitting this, in part. I'll add fascist, dictator, liberal, first-amendment, democracy, Christian, freedom, patriot, racist, prejudice, majority, justice, liberty... oh and truth, fact and probably my favorite, right and wrong!

A segment of those on the right use the words in the OP's title interchangeably to describe all those they don't understand just like a segment of those on the left use the words fascist, racist, hate-monger, etc to describe the republicans that they don't understand.

It's all nonsense and none of it helps

"Democrat" is the name of a political party. "Progressive" refers to a left-leaning wing of that party.

"Socialist" is a practitioner of a political theory posited in the 19th century by Marx and Engels, and "communist" refers to authoritarian socialism as practiced in freedom-quelling nation states such as Castro's Cuba, the former Soviet Bloc and Red China.

Anyone who tries to equate the Democratic Party, and progressive politics with socialism and communism is too ignorant to post anything of value on this forum.
