WTF?

We're not talking about the War on Terror, we're talking about ISIS specifically. They have a leader hierarchy, infrastructure, laws, land, a military, and borders. They are essentially a nation.

Well, not saying this is the answer but Japan hasn't fricked with us since.

I know people don't want to admit it, but this is the answer. And here is why...

What do we have that we can give them to make them stop? What is it they want from us? The answer is quite simply they want to kill our people and totally destroy western civilization. They want to do to every man, woman, and child who they see as not "Muslim" what they've done to the reporters and to thousands of other innocent civilians. So what we have that they want is nothing less than our lives.

Now that we've established what it is they want from us, the next question is are we willing to let them have it? Well, the answer there has to be "no". OK, now that we've answered that question, the next question is what can we do to change their minds? That's where things get complicated. You see, as I said these people use fear, terror, destruction, and murder as their main tool to get their point across. The reason they use these things is these are what they understand. These things are their language. We have to be willing to speak their language. And the best way to change their minds is to use their language to break their will. We have to be willing to deal to them a level of fear, terror, destruction and death on a level that they never dreamed possible. We have to rain down death on them on a level not seen since the firebomb raids of Dresden or Tokyo in WWII. And we have to keep this up until they totally break and bow down to the overwhelming and unquestionable power of the US.

That right there in a nutshell is the only "strategy" that will ever defeat ISIS. I think the POTUS and his generals are fully aware of this but they lack the political will or intestinal fortitude to say so.

Unfortunately I think it is more than just Obama and "his generals" that don't have the fortitude for it.

The republicans don't.

We as a society don't either.

Even though everything you said is 100% correct, if we tried it, the first time the news showed video or pics of a dead child or a destroyed mosque, our own people would be outraged.

We have truly become a nation of spineless wimps. Remember, our political leaders are really just a reflection of us.

In short, we do not have the will to win this fight.

I'm afraid that everything you just said is 100% dead on target. And that terrifies me. The reason it terrifies me is that the US is still a sleeping giant. But ISIS sees us as a decaying, decadent, and dead society unwilling to fight (just as Japan did as well in 1941 BTW). This means that they will come here and they will carry out some sort of attack or attacks. And if I had to guess they'll use their newly won infrastructure to try something that will make 9/11 pale in comparison. When they do that, finally this country will wake up and unleash a level of hell on that part of the world that will make even the hardest jihadist shudder in fear.

There is no good solution. But there may need to be a final solution. Problem is - with asymmetrical warfare, and all kinds of awful technologies, where will that final solution be carried out, and on whom?

Bombs, bombs, bombs and then more bombs. No boots on the ground, an all out, relentless air assault until there is nothing left but dirt.

Bring Ronald Reagan back from the dead---God how i wish he was President now in these turbulent times he would be going after these muslims/murderers/barbarians with our full military might---he would be stunned at the ineptitude of our current commander in chief and what a pussy he really is

Not entirely true. For instance, the cult of the emperor of Japan was essentially a killed ideology after WWII. The Third Reich's Fuhrer cult was another pretty much killed ideology after the Red Army and Patton, et al, met in the middle.

ISIS is not just "radical Islam," though. They mean to be a widespread Islamic state. Not just like a club, like Al Qaeda.

You said you can't kill an ideology. I offered two examples of the wrongness of your assertion. Yes, they were nations. And yes, they were ideologies. And yes, they were killed. So no, you don't get off so easy saying they're different things. Could be they are more alike than you are willing to admit.

Maybe we could install a strongman in Iraq. Some really vicious bastard whose self-preservation instincts would lead him to both suppress extremist religious movements and act as a barrier to the expansion of Iranian influence. We'd probably need a Sunni Muslim whose ideological background is primarily Arab nationalist rather than Islamic fundamentalist.

Anybody know where we could find somebody like that?

We can hope they try this:

@Stratfor: Islamic State militants threaten to target Russia and its President Vladimir Putin in a Sept. 3 video, @AFP reports.
