Looks like I got audited.
Without going into detail, this one is going to suck. The amount they want is going to be pretty painful. Wife (no pics), 3 young kids and another one on the way, and we are very much the definition of a typical middle class family, struggling with inflation and cost of living.

Our taxes aren't even complicated and we have a CPA file them for us every year and the amount they are asking doesn't even make sense. FJB

Sorry to hear that. At least you can sleep soundly at night knowing that money is going to government programs for people of color and Ukrainian weapons

There is something you aren't telling or I would be asking for my CPA's malpractice insurance rep's name.

Just got the letter. Apparently income was under reported. Like I said, our taxes are pretty benign. I don't own any rental property anymore or anything. It's just income tax and any other standard deductions or tax credits and a few investments that I get standard tax statements for. I'm trying to get with my accountant to figure out WTF happened.

I’d love to know the percentage this year. Typically less than 0.8% get audited if they file under 500k income. That number jumps big for a million over
But I now know 3 people who have gotten a letter for 2021

Don’t pay. It’s cheaper to hire a good tax lawyer and waste the government’s time indefinitely.

Do they ever do general audits or is it only where problems are identified and the return is flagged?

How in the hell is this the president’s fault. Personal responsibility…

Have you ever expressed opinions on any social media site that does not align with approved Democrat Party narrative?

So from what your telling us, you don’t own a small business or rental property so you and possibly your wife are W2 employees.

If that is the case then either your tax preparer entered the wrong info on the return or your employer messed up the wage filing. If that is the case, the. It’s an east fix.

I suspect you do own a business and the IRS has more 1099 income reported to them than you reported on your return.

don't be surprised if the problem is a SS# that was transposed, some kind of clerical mistake or typo

Did you itemize? Have a casualty loss? High charitable donations or medical?

Please do this. I don’t think you were audited unless you were told that’s what was happening beforehand and asked to provide more information. The IRS’s stupid computer system spit out a nasty letter because it couldn’t match something up on your tax return. These are wrong very often and in that case take nothing more than a simple explanation from your accountant.
