A Confederate heritage organization has asked the state for permission to gather Sept. 16 at Richmond’s Robert E. Lee monument.

The rally would come roughly a month after Saturday’s white nationalist protest descended into violence in Charlottesville.

The Department of General Services has received a request from Americans for Richmond Monument Preservation for a permit to hold an event at the Lee Monument on Monument Avenue, according to Dena Potter, an agency spokeswoman, who said the application is under review and has not been approved.

Potter said the request was submitted by Bragdon Bowling — a former commander of the Virginia Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans. Bowling could not immediately be reached for comment Sunday evening.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s office said it could not provide information on Sunday, and Mayor Levar Stoney also declined to comment, referring questions to Capitol Police. Stoney spokesman Jim Nolan said city police and Capitol police will be meeting to discuss the request, but he could not provide further information.
Will Rex be there with his dog outfit?

The Veterans will surely be called "White Nationalists, with a touch of the KKK" in the news-even if some of them are black.

Richmond is a bit of a powder keg. The group that actually requested the permit is generally peaceful, but this could get really ugly if more violent groups latch on. Like way worse than Charlottesville.

This is going to be a shite storm. Coming for Richmond's monuments is going to lead to more violence. I grew up there. There are folks on both sides that will show their asses.

This demonstration will not be allowed to proceed. They may end up obtaining the permit through legal channels but the government will ultimately shut it down to score political points against the crackers (and attempt to preserve order as a secondary objective)

Suppression of free speech and rights of assembly is where we are, can only fight it at the ballot box. I do not support the views or actions of anyone on either of the polar fringes but they are Americans with constitutionally protected rights that must be preserved.

I think the Veterans have a right to protest, don't you? I also think the Richmond police have a duty to not allow in non permit antifas. Give them a permit on another weekend.

I think the very statement of showing shows the VA dem mayor in CVille and the Democrat Governor, just how ridiculous it is to remove statues and how some Veterans and causes could be highly offended.

The democrats want to play sick divisive games, let's play... it won't bode well for them politically but someone forgot to tell them that Obama's divisive crap isn't wanted or warranted and causes them to lose.

Good luck with that. Monument avenue isn't an area that can easily be roped off. It is in the middle of one of the most populated areas of the city and walking distance from VCU and downtown.

My point is the antifa need to be warned ahead of time to have the proper permit and if they don't they will all go to jail. They can rally/protest another day. Even the day before. The thing is they would fight each other. The thugs need stopped. (SEE Berkley)

The only way RPD could actually do that would be using pepper spray, tear gas, and bean bags, which is more likely to escalate the situation into a large-scale riot all over the city than to calm things down.

Richmond has a lot of Confederate memorials. If Richmond falls, war is over.

If RVA decides as a community what to do w the statues one way or another why can't outsiders just accept it? Same question for cville.

Let's not overstate the black membership in SCV.

The people in Richmond and Cville are increasingly from out of state, whereas the rural population still has deep ties to the commonwealth. You get into situations where the city might want to do something, but the state at large might not.

That's true in Alexandria for example.

Richmond is our capital though, and thus belongs to all of us. And as the memorials remember our shared sacrifice, they belong to us as well.

They do not belong to the people who moved here from places other.

The monuments are protected though, and the legislature would have to undo that. With growth trends in Northern Virginia, that may happen eventually, but it won't happen tomorrow.

It is terrible that deaths occured. The lady and the two State Troopers that crashed their helo.

Absolutely sad. But the antifa has a history of police standing down for them so their opposing protesters right, wrong or indifferent, defended themselves. The loon that lost his mind plowing people over was horrendous and I denounce it in every way fathomable. For hours it was thought that this loon was antifa, I denounce it then, I denounce it now.

It is sad that the left never denounced BLM or the new antifa.
