U.S. Senator Hatch says 25 percent corporate rate a challenge in tax reform

(Reuters) - Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration face a challenge reducing the U.S. corporate income tax rate to 25 percent, let alone to the 15 percent rate sought by President Donald Trump, the Senate's top tax law writer said on Monday.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, in an interview with Reuters, said that getting the corporate rate to 25 percent from 35 percent would bring a sea change to the U.S. economy. But he added that bipartisan cooperation may be necessary for tax reform to succeed.
The Utah Republican's comments mark the first time that a member of the "Big Six" principals involved in high-level tax reform talks has described a 25 percent corporate tax rate as a challenge. In recent weeks, officials have described a target range of 20 to 25 percent. He described Trump's 15 percent proposal as "very unlikely".
"In fact, it would be kind of miraculous if we could get it down to 25 percent or less. I'd like to get it down to around 20 percent. I'd love to get it at 15 percent if we could," Hatch said. "But I think the odds are, we’re going to be lucky to get it down at all."

What are Democrats going to demand in exchange?

Only because the republicans are a bunch of counts.

Why would any republican vote against tax reform?
The GOP might be divided on key issues, but literally since the 20s the GOP has low taxes as a rallying cry.
It's like the most republican issue of all time

Good post. For any chance at all, they need to wrap in a massive middle class tax cut. Whatever that is.

What is considered middle class nowadays? I have lost count.

Depends whose in power. I was rich the last eight years. I think I'm middle class now. But I wouldn't bet on it.

You need to realize "tax reform" isn't going to happen unless Republicans control both chambers for 4-6 years. "Tax Cuts" are likely but won't last forever, usually under 10 years. They blow this then it's all out war. Trump cannot miss on a big tax cut.

10-15% Capital Gains
No Death Tax
20-25% Corporate Tax
And a nice size middle class targeted tax is what we need.

Yeah, reform has never been high on my priority list. Because I try to live in the real world. Taxes on a postcard. I member that debate.

Reduce taxes on $500,000 and below below to 10% income tax for next 5 years then 15% for the next 5 years after that then sunshine expires.
I offset with higher taxes on rich and people need to realize it's either the rich that get the tax break or the middle class. If we want a middle class tax the rich have to foot the billl but I am giving the rich 20-25% on corporate and 10% on cap gains.
