Mexico and the U.S. have fought for years over tuna. The U.S. insists that any Mexican tuna sold in the U.S. must be "dolphin safe," meaning dolphins weren't killed by tuna fisherman, which was once common. Mexico says its fisherman play by the rules. The U.S. government disagrees.

On Tuesday, the World Trade Organization ruled in Mexico's favor, allowing it to impose trade sanctions worth $163 million a year against the U.S. The WTO says that's how much money Mexico has lost from the U.S. unfairly penalizing Mexican tuna.

Lol how will they collect it? I'm sure the wto probably leases some expense property in the US for next to nothing. We should drop punitive sanctions on them

I'm sure that $163M in sanctions is just what Mexico needs to win a trade war with the US.

This could escalate badly for them

To be accurate, dolphin safe tuna mandates started in 1990 and then strengthened to its current form by Congress in 1997 for more than 700 tuna companies around the world to provide labeling for tuna sold in the US.

It's hilarious that you celebrate something bad for the US because of Trump. Let that sink in for a bit.

How is this on Trump? Sounds more like it is on Obama.

Yep. You must have missed this little tidbit:
Tuesday's ruling by the WTO ends a case that was first filed by Mexico in 2008.

This started at the end of the Bush Administration and went all the way through the Obama Administration.
Reading is fundamental.

Didn't realize that. The case, however, was opened in 2008, right before Obama took office. if he thought there was a problem, he had 8 years to correct it. Either way, how the OP wants to tie this to Trump is beyond me.

Also, it sounds like our government was doing the right thing across multiple presidencies. I'm all for not killing the dolphins.

I am too, however, Mexico's claim is that their fishermen do not kill dolphins, and they follow international rules in protecting them.

Who knows for sure, though?

Who said it is on Trump? This started in the 1970s. The tuna war.

Clearly, we believe that they have been lying. I'm not anti-Mexico or anything. In fact, I basically lived there for short time. However, despite my enjoyment of their country, I doubt their government has the capacity to monitor fishing to an extent that would satisfy international rules.
