UnitedHealth's first-quarter profit soared 35 percent as the nation's biggest health insurer slashed participation in Affordable Care Act exchanges but grew just about every other part of its business

quote:

Enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans and the state- and federally funded Medicaid coverage both swelled for UnitedHealth, which also continued to grow an Optum segment that sells several services outside the company's core health insurance.

Operating earnings from that insurance businesses climbed 15 percent to $2.1 billion, even though UnitedHealth's individual enrollment plunged as it withdrew from nearly all the Affordable Care Act's health insurance exchanges. The insurer pulls in most of its enrollment from group insurance coverage offered through employers.

Surely this is just a coincidence.

I said this a few months ago and got told I was an idiot, but I'm convinced that whoever helped write Obama care from the major insurers miscalculated the costs of providing the Obamacare plans. They're expensive to provide and there just were never the amount of healthy people needed to make it work.

Those of us in the industry have been screaming this since day 1.

BamaSJW will arrive shortly to post outdated and flawed graphs showing the wonders of Obamacare and will berate you for thinking that premiums have increased as well.

I think that they KNEW it was going to be very expensive and HOPED that it would force a Single Payer System (Governemnt Controlled) on everyone.

BamaSJW is evidence of this.

"We must cover everyone and the State is the best to do that". Not a direct quote obviously but that's the gist of his socialist position on the matter.

It was absolutely designed to lead to single payer. I think they had initially hoped that it would work.

However, they knew that if it didn't you can't take entitlements away and not lose elections. It was a brilliant strategy and may still work. I hate that they forced a path to single payer upon us. It's infuriating that our leaders can frick us over like this on purpose.

They good to run up the rates on the payers, and now raking in the profits when they cut the bleeding exchanges. They get to skim the profits, now...who knew?

The danger insurances have is that a huge portion of us are learning to live with huge deductibles. When pre existing is dropped, there are a large number of healthy Americans that may no longer value expensive plans with little out of pocket costs.

They didn't miscalculate...actuaries are great at math. They simply cooked the books by using only the most optimistic forecasts.

They were relying on the bailouts. The entire process and ultimately law was a scam

They did, because they assumed that Medicaid would be expanded nationwide and Republicans wouldn't commit to historic obstruction in limiting promised payments to insurers.

Had they known those things, then their estimates would have been more accurate.

Just face it hack.

The gig is up the word is out the ACA is shitty.

The muslim president lied about the law to get it passed, and now it is imploding. You take away all of the means by which it was falsely propped up and it got exposed.

So they didn't take into account common sense measures?

Shitty job of analysis. I'd have fired any of my analysts who gave me projections that poor.

The ACA is a success, and would be a huge success if Republicans would stop obstructing it at every turn.

This is not opinion, it is fact.
