Still think he would've had a decent shot but he probably got scared away because he knew it would be tricky to negotiate the Alabama/Auburn stuff.

Kay Ivey will probably remain the clear front runner now.....unfortunately.

Saban should run just to make it official.

Roy Moore can't really win the primary (for Gov or Sen.) right?

Being an outsider, if Tuberville had won the primary the Dems probably take the general election.

If Moore wins the primary that's guaranteed. He's a total embarrassment to the judiciary.

Doubtful. It would take a special candidate/person to win the Governor's office in Alabama as a Democrat, regardless of the Republican nominee.

The Senate seats sets up pretty nicely for him. It'll be a special election, which generally attracts a very low turnout. Moore has a pretty vocal and active base which caps out at about 20% in a primary. If it's a crowded field with lots of qualified candidates that split the vote, he could sneak away with the R nomination, and this state isn't electing a Dem to the Senate.

He is a long shot for Governor.

ETA: I can't remember the state rules for a special election. If Moore has to get 50% to win the Republican nomination for Senate, he's a long shot. But I think it's just whoever gets the most votes in the primary. May be wrong on that.

You're pretty on point here and it scares the hell out of me. That 20% stat is accurate and all it will take will be one or two people splitting the vote with Luthor and suddenly you've got Senator Roy Moore. That's scary stuff.

As for Governor, it won't matter if Walt Maddox found a cure for cancer, he has a D next to his name and this state isn't electing a Democrat to any statewide office. In fact, you could say there is no Democratic Party in Alabama right now. I'm not a Dem by any means, but he would have my vote.

Alabama keeps electing absolute morons or corrupt establishment-types to state-wide office. Our love for incumbents is also unmatched. Hell, Tom Parker barely works yet he's served on the AL Supreme Court for 15 years because he won the GOP primary in 2002.

It's pretty maddening so many people in this state won't even consider someone with a D next to their name. And yeah, the state Democratic party is a complete mess right now and because of that they won't get much support from the national DNC. I think Walt has enough appeal to at least get people to consider him. Whether they'll vote for him is another challenge. He's carry Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Montgomery pretty easily. That wouldn't be enough and he'd have to get out into the sticks and drum up some support in the backwoods Baptist/United Methodist churches.

Saw earlier where the founder of the Free the Hops movement is going to run for Gary Palmer's seat as a Dem. I think Palmer is a decent guy(I voted for him last November) and not as horrible as Mo Brooks, or Martha Roby, or Mike Rogers, but I still disagree with him on almost every position. I've called his office before and actually got a call back from him personally and hear my input and was receptive to it.
