So he says European countries need to spend money on defense themselves, rather than us do it. I totally agree. But then comes this. If you are theoretically going to be spending less by having Europe pull more of the weight, why are we going to put MORE into an already gluttonous defense budget?

In some of his rallies, he basically called out the whole "10k hammer and 1k nails" system we have going on. If we can drastically reduce this kind of abuse, we can cut the budget and still have a stronger military. Stop giving contractors corporate welfare.

Have you not been listening to what he has said from day one? "We are going to rebuild our depleted military"

Defense budget determines defense capability and is a bargaining tool in international negotiation.

Whether ethical or not it is the truth. This strategy has been and will be used against our interests when a strategic advantage is held by another nation.

When China decides they want X and Y in this region and you are for Z your capabilities in certain areas determines who is negotiating from the high ground. It determines outcomes without a single shot being fired.

Our carrier fleet and the ability to park a runway in any body of water on planet earth has paid back its cost many times over

Any contract in the domestic private sector is only as valuable/binding as it is enforceable. You see legal battles on breaches constantly throughout our country's courts.
The same thing holds true between nations. Iran doesn't give a shite about following guidelines set in our deal unless we can re-establish their sanctions while having the technology to prevent theirs from being a threat to our assets.

If you are repurposing dollars that are spent on defending foreign countries you are not spending more. Just reallocating from one line item to another. You may very well still wind up spending less.

Increase defense spending? Cause we don't spend enough already.

The excuses and apologies over the next 4-8 years on this board will be epic.

I realize this, but if you are going to save money in Europe why do we need to increase spending by that much?

I'd rather spend it on infrastructure, but he's apparently doing that too.

Because rebuilding and modernizing requires money. It's not that hard.

Repurposing is fine, but an outright increase in spending of this magnitude in addition to repurposing is not.

The military needs to do more with the money they get. Way too much waste

Money we will gain from not spending it in Europe... You are missing the entire point

He's restoring the cuts that were imposed by sequestration.
