but SK say no chance

quote:

SEOUL, South Korea — President Trump’s comment that he wants South Korea to pay for a missile defense system being set up in the country jolted its presidential race on Friday and surprised the government, leaving it scrambling to figure out the intentions of a close ally.In an interview with Reuters on Thursday, Mr. Trump said that he wanted South Korea to pay for the system, known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or Thaad, whose cost he estimated at $1 billion

quote:

Contrary to Mr. Trump’s remarks, South Korea has repeatedly said that it would provide the land and build the base needed for the Thaad missile battery and that the United States would pay for the deployment, operation and maintenance of the system, which was purchased from Lockheed Martin.

quote:

On Friday, the South Korean Defense Ministry said it was not changing that stance. Some wondered whether the government had made a secret agreement under which South Korea would help pay for the system. The government must clarify whether Mr. Trump’s comments reflect his “unilateral wishful thinking” or whether there is such a deal that has not been shared with the public, Son Kum-ju, a spokesman of the opposition People’s Party, said on Friday.

art of the deal??

winning?

"You have a nice country here, be a shame if anything happened to it"

The man basically goes out of his way to alienate long-term allies.

The President that negotiated this should be lauded or criticized for paying $1B to defend SK when they could have participated in the cost to defend themselves.

Who negotiated us spending $1B on this defense system?

If it was O, I have no problem trying to re-negotiate.

If it was Trump, then he should have thought about that earlier.

Who was it?

What is the problem in trying to make them pay for it?

We have all the leverage. Trump sets up easy wins like this so that when he hands Germany their huge bill they can deal with it or we leave NATO.

It's chess. Think ahead. Grasshopper.

If long term allies are alienated when told that they need to pitch in more, especially when it comes to THEIR defense, they weren't very good allies to begin with. More like the guy who lives with a girl, not because he loves her but because he needs a place to live.

I'm tired of footing the bill for the world personally. We've been at this so long that folks are taking advantage of us.

It feels an awful lot like buying friends these days.

They have a presidential election in a week or so. I wonder how stuff like this affects the race.

I have a problem with it.

We are trillions in debt and still paying for the security of another country that can afford to chip in to help themselves?

I'm personally wary of it any longer.

Then no missile defense system then. See how easy that is.

I'm sure they did but what they don't realize is that we are entitled to a rebuttal.

Stick to the topic. Who negotiated missle defense for SK for this particular system?

That person left us exposed for $1B we don't have.

I keep looking. I don't see where he told South Korea this. can you help me out with a link?

So, you think we should pay for the system for South Korea? I thought most of the liberals on here wanted us to be out of Korea all together.

It's obvious how the US-SK alliance benefits SK, but how does it benefit the US?

Why shouldn't they pay for our efforts to protect them?

If they don't like it we can pull our troops out and return all of our ships to Hawaii. If they are attacked by NK we will then honor our alliance by sending aid once the conflict actually starts. Of course, that's if they can survive the initial attack from NK without our help.

We aren't the world's policeman or the world's babysitter. It's time for more countries to put up or shut up.
