The withdrawal from Afghanistan was a major shite show.

Afghanistan was always going to be a quagmire. That being said, I’m of the opinion that we should have never left that base during the withdrawal.

The problem is we have no way of getting it back realistically unless Pakistan wants to play ball. They have no incentive to do so unless we bribe the hell out of them. Then we get an airbase sitting alone that is incredibly expensive to supply (everything has to be flown in going through Pakistan and over much of Afghanistan) and will be a security nightmare. The only reason we would use the base is to start new military operations as well and since we don't control Afghanistan we will have to get the Taliban to agree. That is unless you want to go back to full scale war again.

It's a stupid, stupid idea and Trump went off teleprompter and just rambled it off. Problem is he never admits he makes a mistake and you have legions out there now trying to defend this stuff. I mean he might as well say he wants a base in Mongolia because it is strategically between Russia and China.

This could something like food and medical supplies and I wouldn’t have much of a problem with that. But it could be money or military aid and that’s an entirely different discussion.

First off he just went stream of consciousness again and said something stupid. It's all crap but I'm enjoying watching Trumpsters try to justify it. He was rambling about Biden and Afghanistan and then threw out the Bagram thing because it sounded good without thinking it through at all.

That said it clearly is a mistake because it is so asinine. I mean in a vacuum having this awesome military base able to hit so many spots sounds great. It was an asset we had for sure. That said once we decided we wanted out of Afghanistan the need for it dropped off significantly and the practicality of keeping it dropped to zero. Anyone defending it is either showing they are a complete cultist or a complete idiot. We are more likely to re-install the Shah and go back to pre Mullah Iran than we are to be able to make Bagram functional again.

Trump and his minions simply refuse to take an L though so I'm enjoying watching them try to make sense of this. I hope it keeps going.
