FDR lied when he said that the only thing we had to fear was fear itself. Hundreds of thousands of Americans were casualties at the hands of the Axis. FDR should have told the truth that we should fear the Axis powers, too. Those casualties are on his hands.

The virus isn't that bad.
Let's get a grip here. It has killed predominantly the old and the infirm.
This is by no means something saying their deaths aren't tragic, but their deaths and all the fear mongering are not worth the shutting down the economy like what was done.
And now that we understand, it definitely isn't worth keeping certain states shut down. Why is new York still shut down? Why had California remained shut down for five months? There really is only one reason. Everyone here knows it. Do you know it?
As a leader, the most important thing to do was to avoid panic. He did that. Hell he listened to what the doctors told him to say.
I honestly don't think he did anything wrong.

Sorry you had a bad experience and I’m happy your family ultimately recovered.
That doesn’t change anything though. It’s not that bad as a general rule and to continue to shut lives down despite knowing this, is criminal.

Oh my God, my 92 year old father was hospitalized for a urinary infection, we should shut everything down. People get suck, some pass away. That's how life works.

Honestly, if you think that Trump (who was getting impeached at the time, yet assembled the CV19 Task Force and shut down travel from the epicenter the instant it was declared a pandemic) could have prevented an airborne pathogen that affected and infected every developed country on earth, you are beyond naive and have been gaslighted beyond hope.

I personally know several people who have died in car accidents. It is tragic. It does not mean that I believe the solution is to outlaw cars, even though the odds are far greater that you will die in a car accident rather than from the controlavirus.
