Basically Australia has laws that they cannot accept any refugees by boat, so they are holding these refugees in a camp in New Guinea. The camp is being closed soon, so they are in a bit of a humanitarian pickle.

Is this like an edict from on high or something?

Is this true? If so, why are they trying to screw us with them? We should be pissed at them for that, not the other way around.

It's absolutely fricking true. Obama set up the swaps and most of these ME and North African fugees are on Nauru and Papua New Guinea. Australia won't even let them on the mainland continent.

Yep. Australia is stricter about immigration than us but they are the heroes in the media.

He told Congress if they didn't like something he was doing, to pass a bill. If Australia has some bullshite law where they can't take dangerous criminals, pass a bill.

I honestly do not know all the specifics, just the overall gist of the trade

Australia passed hard laws not accepting refugees by boats, but they are also getting a lot of pressure on the condition of their "camps".

The trade seems like us helping them get out of a PR nightmare.

I'm not sure who "wins" the trade in this deal.

I mean, what do you want them to do? They have a LAW that says they can't accept refugees. WE have to do something.

Well Australia apparently has much stricter vetting practices than we do, and all of these people have been vetted by Australia

I don't think they are knowingly holding "dangerous criminals"

I have no issue with helping friends/allies, if needed

And if all of these people have been vetted by Australia, which apparently everyone agrees is tougher than ours, I honestly don't see the issue

Don't worry. None of our allies are going anywhere. Trump may take a crap on them, but being friends with the U.S. is still the best deal going in the world.
