President Trump on Monday said he announced his pardon of former Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio as Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas because he “assumed the ratings would be far higher.”

“In the middle of a hurricane, even though it was a Friday evening, I assumed the ratings would be far higher than they would be normally,” Trump said during a press conference with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. “You know, the hurricane was just starting.”

Meaning he wasn't trying to hide things like the reporter insinuated.

This is why he so infuriates.

He is not literally Hitler, he is literally not giving a frick about establishment - Media, government, beltway, etc. He's heretic to everyone who covers politics and doesn't kiss the ring of the media or Congress.

And the GOPe hates him for it. frick them.

Trump is the closest thing we have to an independent, 3rd party President we will ever have in our lifetimes.

I don't see in his quotes where he said exactly what the title of this thread said.

It sounded like he was saying he thought ratings would be high, but obviously the hurricane takes attention away.

People are just miserable, this has to be the answer to these things.

Why would ratings matter? If he'd waited until midnight Tuesday it would've made the news.....he is the president for fricks sake....it's not like he can have a wet fart and someone not opine at length about it. He's usually pretty funny but the can't all be gems.......

CNN gave Trump just what he says he wanted, running constant coverage about the pardon.

Yet Trump's fans were in here crying that CNN wouldn't shut up about some dumb pardon. Move on, they said.

Trump was apparently waaay ahead of even his own fans,

No, what @real was saying was, "Never let a serious crisis go to waste."

Trump was getting hit by Dems/ Media that he pardoned Arpaio during Hurricane Harvey to hide the news. The Media wasn't wrong and Trump ended up saying, he pardoned Arpaio when the TV ratings were the highest.

Bizarre thing to say

BIzarre thing to say.

I think Trump is being misinterpreted .....again. He was replying to accusation that he tried to bury news of pardon on Friday night and with huge hurricane coverage. He merely said rating should have been high....meaning lots were watching.

(Not hiding anything, as he indicated in AZ earlier in week, that the pardon was coming.)

So Trump is saying that as a national disaster hit the country, he admits to making a political move instead of focusing on the storm? Not sure that's a good thing.

Would've been better if he did it during his speech in Phoenix.

Which shows just how awesome of a multi-tasker he is. Who else could have issued a formal pardon while, at the same time, expertly overseeing crisis management of a major hurricane as it made made landfall?

Where are the "trying to score political points while people are fighting for their lives in the flooding" crowd?
