That's incredibly misleading, but you knew that already.

quote:

From 1890 to 1910, most black voters in the South were effectively disenfranchised by new state constitutions and state laws incorporating such obstacles as poll taxes and discriminatory literacy tests, from which white male voters were exempted by grandfather clauses. A system of whites-only primaries and violent intimidation by white groups also suppressed black participation.

Sure. Donate and I'll write a letter about your concerns after all the criminals turn in their AKs, uzi and other "fully semi-automatic" scary guns and after the military leaves their auto weapons in storage off the coast of the US mainland.

Either that, or a basic competency test. One that shows a -basic- understanding of how our political system works and our country's history.

I would add in math competency and reading comprehension.
Any one can memorize that stuff your talking about but show certain level of intelligence.

No. Not anyone. You could give the country 3 days to learn and recite the 50 states and their capitols and I bet a significant portion of the populace couldn't pull it off from either pure stupidity (low IQ) or pure laziness.

As a geography lover, I am flat out appalled by how many folks think Las Vegas or St. Louis are capital cities.

Appalled.

If someone makes 150K a year and pays plenty of taxes but prefers to rent for mobility reasons you think they shouldn't be allowed to vote?

Maybe they shouldn't be allowed to vote on property tax proposals

I actually agree that if someone is a citizen and a net tax contributor (pays more in than they get), there should be consideration for them to vote

My brother and I agreed on this as well, but you have to use aggregate over time taxation. One bad year of unemployment shouldn't nullify a person's right to vote.

Land ownership is a terrible idea for a mandatory qualification

I'm not sure of the benefit of memorizing useless trivia.

The first vote that I remember was for issuing a local school bond that would be paid by a tax increase. I voted "frick no" but then moved away a month later for University.

The longtern citizens of that community have to live with my selfish vote forever

After federal troops pulled out of the south, Southern whites used intimidation and violence to deter many blacks from voting . This included lynching , castrations and other vile acts. It was this way that whites where able to regain much of the political power that had been stripped after loosing the civil war. without federal troops to enforce free and fair elections , whites were able to keep blacks marginalized for many decades after reconstruction. Reconstruction turned out be a huge failure for blacks. also whites forced blacks to pass ridiculously difficult “literacy tests” that most whites could not even pass. These tests can be found online. so yes , under federal law blacks were granted the right to vote but southern whites pulled out all the stops to fix elections in their favor. When the confederates got back political power positions like Sheriff and Judge, in small towns there was not really anyone to file greivence with. Many blacks had to return to their former lives of indentured servitude as sharecroppers.

White women were definitely treated better than black men, so it's very surprising that they were denied the vote for so much longer.
It shouldn't be. Allowing black men to vote is sane. Women of any race voting is legitimate lunacy.

But more and more men are acting like women and basing things solely on emotions.

They shouldn't be allowed to vote either.

Instead of an IQ or literacy test or property owner stipulation to vote, I propose a testosterone test.

In what year did the Ernest Green story take place? If you can research that and tell me when and how and what happened and you will see that there is a great deal more going on than the right to vote
