None of that was private lands if I remember correctly. I believe they were already public but making them "National Monuments" prohibited the possibility of using the lands for mining, O&G explorations, etc.

A gun loving southern christian and a west coast skinny-jean could literally share the same protest sign.

We may differ only in tactics in this matter.

I am a huge supporter of public lands.

I love a good "my roads" argument statists use. It's my favorite.

I am as big a "get the government out of our lives" person as there is. But the Public Lands are a truly unique treasure that we have in this country. Land that anyone can go to and enjoy. It's not a left/right issue.

The current system ensures that you children, children's children, and so on will be able to cherish the beauty of America in it's natural state. What other system allows you to have free access to millions and millions of acres of land. Try just going camping/hunting/fish on some open space land in Texas. You'll be met by a pissed off land owner and police; if you're lucky

Yep this is true. 5 Indian tribes lay claim to the area as well, and they are the ones that actually petitioned Obama to used the Antiquities act and declare a section of public land a national monument. A lot the public applauded this, but politics got in the way and started a fight. Utah's republican lawmakers vowed to undo the antiquities act, and here we are today screaming at town hall meetings.

That is the thing I don't get. Many Republican law makers are behind these things and their constituents are NOT.

Trump is a Pro-Public land guy. This is very good for you and I. Donald Jr. is behind his reasoning for this.

The Republicans are using "States rights" as their argument so that when other issues come up that truly do fall under states rights, they'll have a backing. It's a sad political puppet

You are using pictures of people that ILLEGALLY drove onto lands that are closed to vehicle access. Just like most of all public lands w/o roads.

quote:

People drive off-road vehicles on public lands closed to motorized vehicles during the Recapture Canyon protest.

quote:

Lyman was sentenced to 10 days in jail and three years of probation and fined $1,000. Wells got 5 days in jail and three months of probation along with a $500 fine. The two must together pay a total of $96,000 in restitution for damage done to resources during the ride. Ironically, the damage occurred on a portion of trail on which Lyman didn’t even ride. It was Ryan Bundy, in fact, who led a renegade group of protesters onto the more sensitive area, against Lyman’s wishes.

LINK

You're no better than a politician trying to bend the truth

The Bundy's were trying fighting for the exact opposite of what we want. They were trying to claim public lands for themselves

Leave it to the states. The feds have no business owning land. Period.

Just stop, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. I follow Idaho news pretty close because I lived in Boise for a while, and there was a big search for people just this year who went mudding on public lands and rutted it up. Western States take protecting those lands seriously.

The arguments against public lands always comes from those that are ignorant on the issue.

It isn't their fault, necessarily, because it isn't something that comes up much in the eastern states. Being from Louisiana and living here, I often talk to people that are against it without understanding it. They usually come around when they do a little research

True that! Public land is what makes America great. Let's keep it that way.

You mean likely voters don't you. That seems as to how all the polls are based. If I'm right, only 53% of eligible voters showed up at the polls so until the other 47% are polled I would take any popularity polls with a couple of grains of salt.
No, approval polls are not based on likely voters. Election polls are based on likely voters.

That's my understanding, anyhow.

One thing I'm quite sure of is if the states get a hold of the lands then in 25years or so they absolutely could wind up in private ownership via shady political dealings

I won't comment on shady or not shady dealings (who knows what would happen there?), but I would absolutely rather these lands go to individuals. If they have to go to the states first, fine.

What's your reasoning? Why would you like to relinquish your rights to that land?

Your questions don't make sense to me. How much land should the government own?

ETA: How does the government owning it mean I have rights to it at all?
