The trajectory of the gay marriage issue

Despite the recent news from NC, if you look at the direction of public opinion regarding the gay marriage issue, acceptance is steadily increasing in this country.

Take a look at some recent information from Gallup.

Where do you think the issue is headed? Will all states ultimately allow gay marriage?

The difference in support with respect to age is significant. It sure seems to me like once the older generation dies off, the issue could gain overwhelming support based on the current numbers for the younger generation. And I don't see it as an issue where someone's views will change significantly with age.

Thoughts?

Like most social issues, acceptance of a particular behavior is linked to demographics. It is an inevitability.

Based on the disgust expressed by my fellow Carolinians (under 25, mostly), then it is a foregone conclusion.

Hopeful the issue simply goes away with the my generations move into power.. Ultimately i think the wording is a state issue but the denial of rights should be cleared up by the federal government getting out of the marriage business and into protection of contracts. The republicans are clearly behind the ball on this issue in the longterm but if they stick to the ideals of states rights, they can placate the final hold outs.. For myself I'm a republican who cannot wait for this issue to be settled and I applauds the president for stepping up

It is coming and I can't wait to see all the moronic sanctity of marriage people whine about it.

I must have missed the election that any state allowed for same sex marriages......which I would consider "acceptance" in this country.

re: The trajectory of the gay marriage issue
Anybody who holds out against gay marriage at this late date is very clearly on the wrong side of history.

There is literally a 0.0% chance that gay marriage will be illegal in any state in the US in 100 years.

It's coming. This sudden backlash is the fearful trying to keep their narrow version of the world from changing. Same thing happened in the 60s.

If it's left up to individual states, like it should be, then yes it will be in some places.

Pfft. I have issues with their polling data. That kind of swing in one year?

Not buying it at all. Something is awry in the polling data.

Nah this will very soon be recognized as a national civil rights issue and it will change quickly and completely.

Momentum is relatively quick on issues like this.

Glad to see that 'civil rights' activists choose to spend their time on this issue, as opposed to combating the ever-growing federal behemoth that will be the undoing of personal privacy and safety from state intrusion.

Here is an aggregate graph of the data that seems to match Gallup.

The ACLU is so fricking liberal and useless. I really think Ron Paul should dedicate the rest of his life to create an alternate ACLU that does what the original was supposed to do.

I'd love to see Ole Miss get glitterbombed as Shep finally ties the knot in the Square of Oxford.

I would guess bungholery will be protected as a civil right by then.

They still do a lot of good, but yeah they engage in some outlandish (and unneeded) suits.

He is trying to do that...with the Republican Party.

It's none of my business what two people do in their bedroom, but they aren't being arrested for being gay so I don't see it as a civil rights issue. The fed should stay completely out of it. Like abortion.
