The way things have gone since about 2002...I kind of welcome the gridlock.

[quote]Also, the truth is that it is very rare to have a “ 3 peat ” as president from one party, the lone exception in the last 60 years is Reagan - Bush, other than that the nation rarely stays with one party over 8 years.

I have heard continuously in my lifetime how one party or the other was "dead", and said party invariably bounces back. It's cyclical and will remain that way. The masses bring things back toward the center because that is where they feel the most comfortable psychologically.

White House residency:

1901-1913 - 12 yrs - GOP

1913-1921 - 8 yrs - Dems

1921-1933 - 12 yrs - GOP

1933-1953 - 20 yrs - Dems

1953-1961 - 8 yrs- GOP

1961-1969 - 8 yrs- Dems

1969-1977 - 8 yrs- GOP

1977-1981 - 4 yrs- Dems

1981-1993 - 12 yrs- GOP

1993-2001 - 8 yrs - Dems

2001-2009 - 8 yrs GOP

2009-2017 - 8 yrs Dems

GOP 60 yrs Dems 56 yrs

Since Kennedy took office:

GOP 28 yrs Dems 28 yrs

I'll go with a 3rd Indiana Governor to emerge as a possible GOP VP selection - current Gov. Mike Pence.

Nelson will be 74 on Election Day 2016, Dems constantly railing about "old white guys" would greatly diminish his chances.

I assume you are counting King as a "Republican" in that total based upon his speculating that he might caucus with the GOP if they take control of the Senate.

Yup, but no one expexts a VEEP to do much anyway, and they can be replaced rather easily. If you have a Yankee woman on the ticket I would think they would try and steal Florida, the biggest toss-up state.

I was speaking of Bernie Sanders as the Independent

However if the republicans win the senate or if it's a 50-50 tie I could see Senator Manchin of West Virginia swapping his allegiance to the republicans over the coal issue.

Yes, but you assumed Independent King would switch to caucusing with the GOP, right? That was what I was asking.

Can't have both halves of the ticket from the same state.

Well, you can, but it's impractical. Electors have to vote for either a President or a VP who isn't from their own state. So the Florida electors would have to vote for a different VP, and the election will probably be close enough that the GOP couldn't afford to lose those electoral votes. The VP election would end up in the Senate.

If Susana Martinez got involved, it would really make things interesting. She's a female Hispanic that was elected Governor as a Republican in a heavily Democratic state. She's also a Democrat turned Republican. That said, she's already announced that she's running for re--election next year and if she wins, she'd honor her term commitment.

This. When W had a Republican legislature, the Republicans didn't spend like conservatives.
