I'm not sure there is any revenue measure currently with any realistic chance of passing that could replace the revenue supplied by the income tax. This ship has sailed. There will never be enough political capital to do anything about it.

ETA: IT is half of federal revenues. Nothing can replace that anymore.

Taking without consent.

Agree - philosophically, it is none of the FedGov's business how much anyone earns - a consumption tax would be the solution but I also advocate for a much smaller FedGov -

The price of everything would go up & wouldn't notice a difference except hurting more poor people. Some poors are hardworking Americans who fell on hard times due to health , etc

What?

You don't think corp, income, and payroll taxes are already figured into the price of things?

If it is legalized theft...then is it really theft?

what makes it legal is that it has an element of implied consent because the people elected the lawmakers that put the tax code in place

the income tax was implemented over 100 years ago by people who are all dead
no one alive today voted for any of the people that made it legal

there is no element of consent with the current generation of tax payers

No one alive today consented to the Constitution either.

You serious?

Today, general taxes paid by all taxpayers cover nearly as much of the cost of building and maintaining highways as the gas tax and other fees paid by drivers.

You are right.

I've often thought that perhaps we should sunset all laws every 30 years or so that every generation can reaffirm them.
