The UK is the only government with the balls to allow for a secession vote.

What is the Spanish government thinking? Their courts had deemed the referendum vote invalid and, even still, it was likely that the independence vote was going to be a close "no". Now you have the Spanish government initiating violence and outwardly trying to stop the vote. This is driving more people towards independence and making the EU more sympathetic to the plight of the Catalan people.

They (Catalonians) have been setting off bombs for years. What's new?

I spent ten day in Barcelona in June. Like most independent movements it has been brewing forever and gets demagogues from all sides. It's hard to get past all the anger to even understand how they think this actually benefits them.

Underneath it all, it is all about identity politics. Catalonians are upset about central government wasting money, yet want a socialist state. Really the motivations are basically two-fold, (1) I identify a Catalonian and therefore deserve my own country or (2) get rid of the really poor people so I get all the socialist government nutter butter instead of the southerners.

I think you're confusing Catalonia with the Basque separatists.

Also, things are crazy there; the cops are really getting into stopping the referendum:
Twitter video link - kind loud

Spain should be ashamed of this spectacle.

If Catalonia has to have their own soccer league, both Real Madrid and Barcelona are gonna go downhill

As I said the in the other topic did anyone really think Spain would let their most economically well off territory go without a fight?

La Liga has already said FC Barcelona can stay even if they split.

Not to mention the precedent it would set for other autonomous communities within Spain. The Basque Country and Galicia would be next. A decade down the line Extremaduran separatists would want to go as well.

The idea of self-determination and independence is noble but where do we draw the line? Can we or should we let Europe fracture into dozens of micronations?

And if the courts already said that referendum was invalid, why stoke more discord by attacking the voters?

Guess what, they sure aren't going to shut up now. The only thing Rajoy did was weaken himself politically and motivate the region even more.

As I saw on twitter, maybe the best way to convince someone to stay with you, isn't to beat the crap out of them.

The EU ruling class loves these "independence" movements because it means more pro-EU countries. I find it hilarious that Scotland and Catalonia, who claim to want freedom from the U.K. and Spain respectively, seem to have no problem with immediately ceding that freedom to the bureaucratic monstrosity that is the European Union.

I think people are overestimating the possibility of an actual civil war in a developed Western nation in 2017.

At most, it's couple of terrorist cells performing hit and run attacks on civilians. The thought of an actual civil war is laughable.

It's the new worldwide fad.Nobody wants to be connected to nor allied with anybody. Strange times.
