Wow. I managed to confuse all of you. In my sleep deprived mind, this makes total sense. Let me try again. OP said this is the order he would use to call people for the draft:
I took that to mean that people in categories 1-3 with kids would be sent before #4 - those without kids. That's a recipe for a lot of orphans (as their parents die) that the taxpayers would then have to support and I can't adopt them all
I'm not sure where I got the frail elderly. May be because he posted no age limit? Obviously the frail elderly wouldn't go but at what age would he cut it off? 30s? 40s? 50s?
This is one of my 3 busiest weeks of every year. No sleep does weird things to my brain.

1) People living off unemployment/ the "government tit" as you all like to say
2) People with no high school diploma / working unskilled minimum wage jobs
3) People with no college degree
4) People with no children

Is your goal defending the nation or Eugenics?

It's not crazy it is classist and would lead to everyone having babies.

What you are describing in the OP is called "adverse selection" in my business. You'd wind up with an army full of the worst possible candidates. There are already a lot of shitheads in the military, without the draft. At least today you have the occasional Pat Tillman, a high-performer who gives up a great life out of a sense of duty.

It worked pretty well for WWI. It would have been interesting to see what effect it may have had had they started the draft for it earlier.
Different war but in WWII, almost every male (eligible age) was drafted, had they not already joined. Medical conditions made some exempt.

So tell me is this really THAT ridiculous?
I'm not saying its ridiculous but I don't care for it. If we were ever to reestablish a draft it should be through a lottery and everyone should be included. You can't eliminate certain groups and place the entire burden on others and declare this thing to be fair.

Your idea would work for an army in the middle ages when the most important requirement of a soldier was that he had a pulse. In today's military an army of lazy miscreants with low IQs would be a disaster.

There is no correlation with race but there certainly is with socioeconomic status.
There is this perception propogated by folks like Charlie Rangel out there that we are sending poor and marginalized minority kids to do our fighting and dying in these wars, when in fact, the exact opposite is true. Both statistically and anecdotally the combat arms branches of the Army and Marines have an over-representation of middle class white kids.

86% of the Americans killed in Vietnam, when there was a draft, were white males.
Yes, there has always been that inaccurate perception that minority kids died in outsized numbers in Vietnam - minority kids actually died at a slightly lower rate than their percentage of the military-aged male population of the time.
The difference is far more pronounced now, though, for a lot of reasons. It was not something I necessarily expected before I was in - to see how lily-white a lot of infantry and special operations units are now. It is arguably counter-productive when going into a place like Iraq or northern Africa or Latin America.

Most the black recon Marines I've met were actually immigrants from Africa as opposed to just black kids from America. Does anyone else think that's odd? Of course I've only met a few anyway. :insertracistjokeaboutswimminghere:

Yes, there is correlation with both.
Jews: 115
Asian: 107
Whites: 100
Hispanic: 91
Blacks: 86
I'm working from memory so I might be off 1 or 2 points in any category.

I get what you are saying but didn't the Marines prove women aren't fit for the front line when they released that over half couldn't even meet basic PT standards? I mean, if you can't do 3 pull-ups I don't want you fighting off Haji's for me. I'll do it myself thank you.
Not sure about that but my point is that women's rights activists always piss and moan about women's roles in combat (or lack thereof). If they're so fit and capable for combat, then they should be added to the selective service list.

I had a friend once who said if there was a draft, he'd suggest going back to the civil war days. Let prisoners fight the war, in return they get their freedom.

I think the NUMBER ONE group to be picked - and they must enlist as the lowest grade -- are the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids of federal politicians and federal judges.
Plus, whenever we are in battle, they should all be on the front lines FIRST.
No deferments, no excuses. And, unless they are legitimately in a wheelchair (none of this Disney World scooter bullsh!t), no bullsh!t "disabilities."

Conscription is a good way to stay out of every foreign conflict that the media sinks their teeth into.
