I think if everyone had to actively pay a check to the government then there would be more accountability and fiscal responsibility from our politicians.
Lots of people would be in tax prison. It would be like those that say to do away with social security and let me invest it. Would be a lot of dead broke people come retirement age. Ninety per cent of people lack discipline.
Also, I disagree as to politicians acting any differently.

Medicaid office.. not an empty chair. Filled up and overflowing out of the office

Yeah of course lmao. Those patients also want EVERY SINGLE THING they’ve ever seen someone with, read about or think exists. Literally had one yesterday bitching that her surgeon “didn’t even ask if that’s how I wanted the surgery done” like bitch he saved your life not gave you a new nose.

Withholding should be ended and everyone should have to write a check on tax day. Nobody should get a “refund” for more than they paid. AND tax day should be moved to the Monday before Election Day.

Make people feel the true cost of bloated government right before they vote.

I’ve been self-employed and have written quarterly checks to the IRS and the state for 30 years. When you have to send them thousands of dollars every three months, you pay attention. I use every trick my accountant knows or can make up. I pay as little as possible… or less.
