Any thoughts from the collective on the practice of tax withholding?

Read this interesting post today:

I think if everyone had to actively pay a check to the government then there would be more accountability and fiscal responsibility from our politicians.

Should be illegal.

Everyone should have to stroke a check for a minimum of $100/month.

They'd pay some fucning attention to spending and tax policy.

My first year as a pharmacist… I made good money and had never ever made more than like $10,000 per year beforehand .. but they withheld my taxes throughout the year

Come filing season… they sent me a letter saying I had to go to the social security office and verify my identity in order to get my refund.

I also had to login to some portal and answer various questions like my grandmothers birthday and pick an address I had lived in ti further verify myself

They had no problem taking my money all year, didn’t give a shite if I was who I said I was or not until it came time to get my money back… NOW they want to know who I am .

So the Medicaid office is right next door to the social security office .

Medicaid office.. not an empty chair. Filled up and overflowing out of the office

Social security office.. I was the only person in there.. and I thought.. yep this about sums up America right here.

Absolutely without a doubt there would be. And the dipshit politicians couldn’t get soys all worked up on their programmed outrage du jour as easily.

If withholdings went away tomorrow, no democrat would ever win an election again.

Congress should pass a law saying the IRS has to pay you interest with your refund. That might prompt some changes.

Ought to be illegal.

Absolutely. Taxes ought to be paid by each person quarterly. Payroll tax should be outlawed as well. Make every damn commie, single mom, purple haired idiot, and hood rat write a check for 50% of earnings every quarter.

I’d like to propose that Election Day should be the day after tax day.

Better than every month. Everyone pays quarterly like anyone else that doesn't get withholding or owns their own business.

My quarterly checks are the largest checks I have ever written and it isn't even close.

A lot of people would wake up and pay attention if this was the case. The politicians started the withholding for a reason. It is past time to stop that sleight of hand trick.

Election Day should be the first Tuesday after April 15.

I know what you’re saying, but Pete, all those refund folks won’t care.
Won’t matter, those losers file in January.

If there was no withholding, could you imagine how bad the deficit would be??

Wait, y’all didn’t think they would cut spending, did you???

I’ve been to the SSA once and it was packed. Hour plus wait.

It was actually because I changed jobs and they rejected my filing because THEY had the wrong spelling of my name and wrong SSN. I had to take an afternoon off work and wait an hour…

to convince them they screwed up and to accept my filing and check. While I was pissed, I was also the most cordial person to them.

Between taking my teenager to the DPS and hearing all the BS and lies they have to deal with in the last year, I kinda get why government employees at agencies like that are miserable.

99% of the people there are lying, don’t have the correct information, want something for free, or don’t have a clue. I had all the correct info for my 16 YO getting their license and it was an ok experience. I was thanked for making it easy for them as opposed to 99% of their interactions. The two people in front of us were grandparents getting their grandkids licenses and didn’t have an idea where any information was.

So I kinda get it.

We should go back to bonds. Government proposes a program and asks for bonds. You want to support it, you buy a bond. You don’t, then you don’t have to. Programs the people want get paid for. The ones they don’t, don’t.

I’ve said for a long time, let me choose which department I want to send my taxes to. FedGov would find out real quick which agencies aren’t actually wanted by their constituents.

They do if it gets delayed.

One year, I had my return delayed and now I have to file with a IRS security PIN that they mail me ever since that happened.

The interest was maybe a dollar on the two hundred or so they owed me.

I think someone filed a return using my social security number, that initiated the hold.
