St. George News, Stolen from OT

You would probably get more responses if you would edit your title to specify what the news is.

The other good thing...I believe it prevents the annexation efforts that have not already been approved from being voted upon (i.e., L'Auberge).

So we should expect the lawyers to jump in right away. I know Mary is licking her chops. I wonder who SG has lined up.

They're aiming for the March elections. So that's how.

News alert: St. George supporters submitting petition today

Organizers of the city of St. George incorporation effort are submitting more than 18,000 petition signatures to the East Baton Rouge Registrar of Voters office today, potentially clearing the way for voters in unincorporated East Baton Rouge Parish to weigh in on the issue in the Dec. 6 election. Registrar of Voters Elaine Lamb says Tuesday is the deadline for submissions to be placed on the December ballot, though her office must still verify the petition signatures and determine roughly 17,750 are valid in order for a vote on the issue to go forward. "It's going to take several weeks to verify them because early voting starts tomorrow and all four of my offices will be bombarded," Lamb says. In a prepared statement, St. George spokesman Lionel Rainey says the group chose to turn in the petition today—even though it does not yet have the 20,000 signatures that would ensure enough of those on the petition are valid—due to "the constant efforts by the City of Baton Rouge to undermine the democratic process." Local attorney Mary Olive Pierson, who is representing the city-parish in its efforts to prevent the incorporation, has said the city would immediately file a legal challenge once the petition was submitted. Pierson could not immediately be reached for comment this morning. —Stephanie Riegel

The way I understand it, if the registrar doesn't have enough time to verify all 18K signatures, they continue to verify through the election. It wouldn't hold up the election. Then, the results would be invalidated by court order if enough signatures proved to be fraudulent. Correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I appreciate that, but is there a deadline to notify the governor that a petition has been submitted and is valid or does the Reg. of Voters have to finish her audit on October 21st and notify the governor by then that the sigs are valid, etc?

WAFB and the Advocate both say March. That makes better sense. If it takes 4 weeks like she says, she would have needed to get the petition sometimes in mid September to made an October 21st deadline (if that is indeed the deadline to turn it in to the governor).

How is that a good thing? Do any children live at the casino?

Oh, right. SG is about getting crooks and acquaintances of Bodi White control over the money.

No...

Nor do they live at Siegen Marketplace, MOL, OLOL, BRGMC, etc.

Viable municipalities (and school districts [if one ever comes into existence]) require tax revenue to operate.

I am not so foolish to believe that StG can operate without raising taxes. However, I also know that the City of BR is being a pissy little teenage girl at the prospect that some of their $$$$ might go somewhere else where it won't be pissed away supporting a shithole school district.

I will still likely vote against StG, but the actions of those opposed to it are convincing me that I should vote for it.

It either one of the other, St. Georgeans are either racists, or idiots who want Bodi White and Rainey to steal our taxes.

Don't you love the intellectual "honesty" in these two arguments?

I can understand someone arguing about taxes going up, or SG is too large and unwieldy, or the citizens group pushing this is not prepared to start a new city; but to call us racists and idiots proves how desperate some are to stop this.

Did you not read the link in the OP?

quote:

Despite the decision to turn the petition in ahead of reaching that threshold, voters in the proposed new city will not get a chance to vote until next spring at the earliest.

Registrar Elaine Lamb said there is no chance for a December election.
