The NBA as an organization faced financial blowback from this if they did not act. As a fan of private enterprise, this is exactly how this is supposed to work.
You don't like what a business person does or says, boycott or threaten to boycott to get them to change their behavior. This is the american way embodied.
I don't get why yall don't want private organization to make business decisions.
And no way the court strikes this down, I feel confident that sterling signed a personal conduct waiver when he bought the team.

Better question...Does the ban from making decisions keep him from signing the paperwork to sell the team?

Thing is what he said was blown way out. That's my opinion, and I don't like liberal dems.

Exactly. Not to mention the hostile work environment claims that would hit the NBA if players for forced to play for the man. The NBA has the right to run their business as they see fit.

I see your point.

3/4 of the NBA owners can vote to force him out. There's already talk about a bidding war going on to buy the team from him.
The best he could do at this point is say he's sorry, sell the team, walk away and never be heard from again.

Yet the NBA still lets a rapper who raps/speaks about N's, ho's, thugs, etc, own a part of Brooklyn team.
The NBA should ban all artists who have EVER rapped using the N word, therefore banning the players from listening to the artist's songs.....because if they are found singing along, they are in direct violation of the NBA's stance as applied to Mr sterling.
He will file suit and win, showing how the NBA allows certain instances of racial tolerance. But only when they gain financially.

You think he did this in 1981?
He probably signed a waiver of recourse agreeing not to sue the league or fellow owners while he is an owner.
Right now he is under a lifetime ban.
The NBA doesn't have the authority to make him sell, and doesn't have the authority to ban him from buildings that he owns or leases, nor to meet with people that he employees.
The NBA does have the authority to punish the team or to prevent them from playing in sanctioned games.
Just to add, I think his comments are dumb. I think his views are dumb. I think his choice of women is deplorable. But the NBA does not have the authority to do this.

I don't think they had a choice. The PR was just too much.

I find this to be a funny/sad commentary on our society today. From what I understand, the guy has done horrible things in his past business life that while, perhaps not illegal, were certainly unethical, and yet this is the spark that set off an inferno. I think it speaks to the general level of ignorance in society and the way society is lead by an equally ignorant media that feeds off of short term memory, sound bites and emotions.

Lesson: anything you say in private confidence that displeases an elite group can be used to ban you from involvement in a business which you own.

We better make sure that all the words we utter pass the PC test.
It drives me crazy when people throw around "Freedom of Speech!" in these circumstances. The Constitution does NOT protect you from negative consequences of your speech. It protects you from criminal prosecution based on something you say.

I don't think you understand how freedom of speech works.

Yes it does. Under certain circumstances, if those consequences are imposed by government.

The worst thing I try to get across is the NBA's involvement with Jay Z! How many times in this guys lyrics does he promote violence and use the N word in a derogatory way?
frick the NBA on this, they will be shown for what they are.

1/15 of 1 percent of the team which he has already sold.
You can rest easy now.

Posted on 4/29/14 at 1:59 pm to GeauxxxTigers23
I would tell them to shove the 2.5 million fine up their arse
Seriously, I understand the league punishment, but there are no legal avenues to force him to sell his own property.
