Somebody help me out here - how can a substantial portion of America vote DEM?

What exactly is their motivation. EDIT = substitute issue that can be articulated here. As pointed out below the motive is just to get free stuff in one way or another.
Is it all just 'hate Trump,' and if so, what is the basis of the hatred?
Is there some policy they crave that Trump is not addressing, and is so what policy?
Is there something else I cannot grasp? For the life of me, I cannot think of anything at all that would motivate any American to want DEMOCRATs in control.
Which leads me to believe all this is about ANTI-American heritage, history, and civilization.
Nothing else makes any sense at all

Go to New York or San Fransisco and ask that same question but substitute DEM for Republican.

No one disputes that is the case. But I think the OP is asking for those who vote Democrat to simply articulate why?

There's still a large percentage that believe the brainwashed lie that democrats are for the poor and working people. If that was the case, the would rather people keep more of their paycheck. But they feel they can spend your money better than you.

I’m also curious what their platform is, besides hating Trump. Their ideology is purely emotional, and it seems like they are mainly focusing on:
Gun control
Climate change
Open borders
They don’t have a foreign policy or economic message, most likely because Trump is killing it in those respective areas.

A majority of the population is disgusted by this fraud who is President, and cannot wait until he is out of office.
This is not a mere political opponent winning an election. If he was in any way rational, for example either Bush or Reagan or Romney or damn near anyone else but Trump, then it would be just another President, so be it.
But every day he disgraces the office and embarrasses our country. Calling the press the enemy?? That is flat out unamerican, and there are many many many more examples.
