So will any of this affect CNN's bottom line?

Look, I have enjoyed the heck out of this.
And I love that at least some neutral and even liberal observers have pointed out how wrong-headed CNN has been.
But I don't think losing the meme war really costs CNN anything. I don't think the rule of "if you die in the Matrix you die in real life" applies.
If anything I am worried that they will get MORE attention and clicks which = more money.
It seems as long as you have no shame, the internet cannot hurt you.
So what potential scenarios do y'all see where this actually affects CNN in some tangible way?

Short term, maybe. Long term, they'll survive and be fine.

Ask Gawker about the tangible effects of a 'meme war.'

Well that and a massive lawsuit.

I'm asking because I don't know.
Was Gawker protected under the HUGE umbrella of a giant conglomerate?

You suck at math

No, Gawker was privately held. No conglomeration before they were bought out.
They were boycotted in 2014 and they lost millions.

Short term financial - no.
But it erodes their honesty perception, and that could effect their long term financial and political power.

To be fair, a loss of "credibility" is a bad thing for a news media organization.
No news organization would CHOOSE to have this occur.
You can only take so many 'chips' away at your base before it is too late.
The Grand Canyon thought it was 'cute' when it was the Tiny Indentation: "So what if water takes a little bit of me away?...there is a lot of me left!"

It's hard to change a reputation. Financially they'll be fine with more viewers but more of them will watch for entertainment and not news. They have a lot of work ahead of them for a large number of people to find them even remotely respectable.

Ehhhh, they kinda did choose this.

No..they made a poor "choice" in thinking they'd be 'congratulated' for their "epic take down of the troll".
They were incorrect and LOST

I can't remember a time when someone was so wrong about the pulse of something. Almost the whole internet turned on CNN yesterday(except for a few dipshits here).
I doubt this hurts them long term but in the short they sure look like shite.

I am in more agreement with BHP.
Short-term they will probably do well with the increased attention.
Long-term this is another blow to their reputation, which you need if you are going to be a news organization.
If they decide "screw it, let's become a bigger MSNBC and just be the leftwing anti-trump news, they will start to lose talent. I think there are more vulnerable there than in actual ratings. And that pushes the snowball a little further down the mountain.

It hurts their name. It hurts their credibility.
Their existence is predicated on their ability to push a narrative, an agenda. It is becoming increasingly difficult for them to do that.

They will receive a deceptive bump in viewership and internet hits, but it will fade eventually, leaving them with a worse situation than they had previously.

Not sure where this idea that liberals love CNN came from. Liberals were pretty incensed when CNN hired Corey Lewandowski soon after he left the Trump campaign team, and soon after the assault allegations against him. The funny thing is I remember a lot of CNN defense on this board over that.
Other than Jake Tapper, I don't know of any other CNN anchor the liberals I know like on CNN.

Well, somebody is watching. It can't all be conservatives watching to come up with their next TD poli board post!

Actual, talented journalists, producers, and editors won't want to work for what is essentially becoming E! News. Their demographics will become increasingly less educated and more poor, meaning advertisers will pay less. Even longer term, if we reach an a la carte pricing option for video streaming FNN = fricked. People will flip over now to see Wolf spazzing out or Drunk Don Lemon getting an under the table handy on New Years, but NO ONE would willingly choose to add them to a cable/streaming package.
