They reached out before, but he didn't respond. They e-mailed and called, presumable leaving a voicemail. He called them back and they spoke after he apologized.
Semantics and technicalities are being gripped as tight as possible by CNN at this point. They told him they knew who he was, either via e-mail or voicemail. He clearly took this as a threat (it was), and covered his tracks before calling them back.

The problem with CNN's narrative is that the man had nothing apologize for. It is likely that one of the happiest moments in his life was when Trump tweeted it.

They try to reach out to him but he won't answer
He realizes he's in deep shite from email he received and immediately retracted
He then, after cnn tries to reach out to Jim and after retracting, calls them back
Reaching out is NOT the same as actually making contact.

Pretty clear to me those statements don't contradict each other.
He apologized and deleted his account after contact attempts were made by CNN, but before he actually spoke to them. He clearly got spooked. Would like to see the emails or listen to the voicemails left for him to see how those contact attempts were phrased.

So, your position is that the first one is NOT supposed to say that the guy deleted it before hearing from CNN, i.e., that most people would read that and say, "Well, he must have been contacted some other way FIRST, but it was not a phone call."
