Why shouldn't they assist the federal government?

It's not the police that are resisting, it's the politicians. The police themselves would love nothing more than to have an additional way to get illegals off the street and out of the country.

The local and state police have their own jobs to do. They should serve their citizens in solving and preventing crimes.

In the event of those investigation and arrest if they detain individuals that the federal government has an interest in then they should be detained and turned over in a timely manner.

But I also think that once the identity of an illegal is confirmed that individual should not longer receive any of the rights or protections of the government.

If it's during the course of their normal duties and responsibilities, yes. If it takes away from normal workload, no.

Help? No

A part of the proper process? Sure

How about ICE shows up after they detain an illegal. This is the problem or has been.

Yes they should go around asking everyone to "show their papers". Nothing could ever go wrong from that

No. State police enforce state law. Federal LEO enforce federal law. One should not become the other.

That actually would solve a lot of problems. Look at civil asset forfeiture & equitable sharing.

This. They all have their own job to do. Local Police should not be doing the job of a federal agent, mostly because lack training and their presence could jeopardize a case. But also because we are already paying federal taxes to federal agencies to do their job.

Here's a really novel concept: The police should follow the laws.

So, in states and/or localities that have laws requiring local/state to help ICE they should do so.

All others should at the least stay out of the ICE agents/organization way. And any that actively obstruct ICE should be charged as co-conspirators in any/all related activities by the individuals ICE are pursuing. So if "Juan" is released and commits another crime after ICE has specifically informed SF PD Officer Jones to hold Juan, Officer Jones becomes Inmate Jones.
