Given the growing impatience among some conservatives with McConnell and Ryan there may very well be calls for changes in Congressional leadership.

Ryan may even want to step down.

If Scalise wants the job it is his in such a scenario IMHO. Who could run against the survivor of an assassination attempt? He has amassed a good deal of power on his own and now with the huge surge in his profile from the unfortunate shooting I doubt any other republican would challenge him.

Scalise would be a much better speaker than Paul Ryan, but then again a wet paper sack could be a better speaker than Paul Ryan.

He could, but man he has a long, long road of recovery ahead of him.

I certainly hope he is back this year even if he has more medical procedures latter on.

He could and would be better but I imagine he wouldn't want that workload while recovering.

Give him some time.

After the midterms he could rise to Speaker. McCarthy blew his shot and Scalise has a good relationship with Freedom Caucus. I hate that it took him getting shot to shift the odds to his favor but that's the reality. Nobody will have his popularity when the time comes.

I know it's all the rage to complain about Paul Ryan and maybe deservedly so, however, as it applies to keeping and getting Republicans into office, he has proven quite effective. Handel would not have stood a chance without Ryan's help and direction. Trump owes Ryan for the work he and Priebus did in Wisconsin in the general election. Same with Gianforte in Montana.
