I saw him this morning on Maria. He didn't come right out and say "BAT" but he did say the cuts in income tax would have to be offset with "territory" taxes or some stupid synonym he has invented for tariffs.

Hey Ryan! you want to make tax cuts deficit neutral----cut the friggin spending too.

BAT taxes are horrible and in the long run WILL NOT add to revenue as the economy will not grow because of the BAT tax---the money will just be in hands of big companies that lobby government to keep their foreign competitors at a disadvantage. Screw them. BAT taxes will put more Americans out of work than it will put to work. There are a lot of companies that depend on imported goods to make their final products.

Ryan complains that just the mere proposal of targeted tariffs are protectionism and he doesn't believe in protectionism.

Then he turns around and proposes a blanket 20% tariff on all imports, AKA BAT.

Are you so sure the border adjustment tax is a bad idea?

This economist doesn't think so. (via CNBC)

I never trust conservatives to handle the tax cuts or budget cuts responsibly for two reasons:
1.) They never correlate tax cuts with budget cuts dollar for dollar.
2.) They never reduce mission scope of government in order to reduce the budget. They keep the mission the same and ask them to do more with less. Then they complain when the government can't do its job.

In other words, they pay lip service to the crowd that hates paying taxes and believes government is the root of all evil.

What is quite interesting is the fact that federal revenue as a function of GDP has been consistently 17% since 1940 despite various tax rates. LINK

Based on this the easiest way to budget would be to say, "our projected GDP is $17.5 trillion next year. 17% of $17.5 trillion is $3 trillion. That's our spending budget next year."

Because politicians want to survive the next election.

Ha perhaps. But perhaps given that there are so many "untouchables" they should just estimate how much everything is going to cost and then raise the revenue to meet those costs.

Yes. I would absolutely prefer a VAT to offset income taxes.

ChEgrad that guy makes a very large and very bad assumption:

quote:

They are missing the forest for the trees by focusing on the narrow impacts of tax changes on their companies rather than the big picture benefits of reform for their customers and the overall economy. Ultimately, a stronger economy with rising incomes and better job creation means more money for families to spend in stores and online. That's what the Brady-Ryan tax plan will mean—a stronger economy—and that's good for retailers, even if they don't see it that way quite yet.

That a BAT would create a stronger economy is just BS. It will create higher prices for consumers and destroy jobs in companies that import goods to make their products. It will also in several industries create monopolies.
