I have to agree

He and Fassbender killed it in that film, IMO.

ETA: Never seen luther either, actually.

luther is on a long list of series to start, along with mad men, dexter, archer, and a bunch of others

The "dilemma" today is that there's a deluge of good television available. Hard to make time for all the series I want/need to watch.

I'm a huge fan of dexter and archer. Mad men wasn't really my cup o' tea, but most people love it from what I can tell

wanna know how I know you've never spoken to a black person before?

forget that Idris Elba doesn't speak in black vernacular at all, that's not even how you construct that in black vernacular

you should be embarrassed tbh

The dude is pretty amazing. As ridiculous as the Luther series is from a logic standpoint, I love it. Ruth Wilson helps a lot.

That show is about as far-fetched as any "guy" show I've ever seen (up there with Scandal, Revenge, and other chick shows) but it was just really excellent television. And Alice (Ruth Wilson) really made the show, but Elba and the rest of the supporting cast all did well. Of course, I'm a bit of an anglophile.

Talk to anybody who speaks the... dialect/accent (I forget which one it's considered). No one introduces themselves as "I be [name]."

It's not like there are rules you learn in a grammar class but there are obvious trends you can pick up on. The construction that guy described sounds like a fricking caveman

there is quite a bit of racism in this thread:

* Idris Elba would make a fantastic james bond. he is one of the best english actors out there today, nailing every role given to him. He is also works well in action adventure type roles
* If you read the james bond books, you will soon discover the books and movies have almost no relation. Yeah, they might keep the name of the characters but the plots have almost nothing to do with the books.
* There are 20+ films and only 16 books (I think), obviously they are completely off script at this point
* They have deviated from physical characteristics before of main characters and the results were fantastic (blonde bond, and Judi Dench as M).

If you believe that james bond being played by Idris Elba is somehow wrong, you are VERY racist. And not very smart.

bullshite.

If you want to call someone a racist and stupid who thinks the fictional character, James Bond, shouldn't be portrayed by a black man then that makes you a racist and not very smart.

Give me one logical reason why James Bond should be portrayed by a black man and I'll change my mind.

I'm still waiting for a logical reason.

Elba's natural dialect is MLE (aka Jafaican), which is the bastard son of Afro-Caribbean and Cockney. LINK

But as the Wire showed, he's an actor. If he could pull off Baltimore well enough to fool natives, I'm pretty sure he could pull off Scottish.

No, it is objectively stupid to complain that the ACTOR HIMSELF is not Scottish.

I love how "need" and "should" somehow creep their way into questions of ENTERTAINMENT.

Rush wasn't pouting about a black James Bond, I agree completely, why would you make a character who is white and Scottish, with a 50 year history , and I've read ever book as well, a black guy? Why?

Rush explicitly mentioned that the ACTOR HIMSELF was not Scottish. It's stupid in several different ways.

But to answer your question, why wouldn't you? It's ENTERTAINMENT.

Are you telling me that you are giving me an "F' in Ebonics.

Blacks can speak their "black vernacular" all they want when they are among black people but when they speak their "black vernacular" to people who have taken the time and trouble to learn how to speak proper English then those blacks come across as being ignorant, lazy or so mulish they refuse to learn to speak proper English.

Black people who don't make the effort to learn how to speak proper English and can only speak the "black vernacular" form of English should be embarrassed.
