It's important to understand why the attack occurred, how they were radicalized. That said, no one wants to give Tsarnaev a pedestal to stand on or to give him more credit than is necessary. That in part an emotional reaction, but also think of Bin Laden and how we turned him into an nearly mythological figure after 9/11.
Rolling Stone is angling for a reaction, and that's also part of it. They want controversy, they want to sell magazines, and Bostonians have little taste for that. It's exploitative.
