What about those with type 1 diabetes? No life style choices there. You just had bad luck. Do you still pay more?

Well, you either make that person pay more or you take more from others in the form of higher premiums simply because you feel like it's fair.

Either works but claims are claims and must be paid. There's no getting around that.

Well yeah of course. Which one though? Do we tell everyone to pay their own way? Or do we say, hey we will help pay for stuff as a society that is out of the control of the individual or stuff that everyone deals with like pregnancy but you have to pay for your own issues related to lifestyle diseases.

my company offers health insurance.

the employee paid portion is set based on what plan you sign up for and what dependents you have

they just instituted two "wellness plan items"

1) employee take a physical every year. paid 100% by the insurance. if employee doesn't take the physical then they pay $40 more a week out of pocket for their health insurance

2) if an employee uses tobacco they either sign up for a tobacco cessation program (paid by company) or pay $40/week more out of pocket. (dont have to quit, but have to do program)

Depends on how far down the road to socialism you want to go.

It's really easy to be generous with other people's money. Tough question for sure.

Perhaps a fully compliant Type 1 patient could catch a break and have his claims paid by someone else. Are you OK with the fat, lazy and non-compliant Type 2 patient being told tough luck?

What your company doing is quite normal now.

People are being provided incentives to take care of themselves because without that incentive people generally DGAF. Hit them in their wallet though...

As little as reasonably possible.

Not by someone else. By everyone.

I think if a licensed medical professional couldn't provide a viable reason you are unable to handle your lifestyle disease (like you were in a car crash and are now paralyzed) then you should have to pay for your own bad decisions.

Yes. Someone else is paying for a portion of his bad luck because you believe it's fair in your scenario. Someone else is paying more than they ordinarily would have to pay.

But it's not by everybody. Almost half the people don't pay taxes.

I have a close friend who is repulsed by people eating with their hands.

Well, eating with your hands is kinda nasty TBH.

Most people don't wash their hands long enough to actually do anything but move the germs around a bit.

He was very particular rearing his kids about it.

He didn't want them handling food like a bunch of low-born savages.

Have type 1 diabetes? Yes, this should be a factor in your health insurance premiums.

In addition, if a person is controlling their diabetes with diet and medication and maintain good health then those positive factors should help reduce the cost of premiums. This is the basics of insurance.

Actually no he does not enjoy crawfish/crab boils for that very reason. And he will tell you so.

He is genuinely turned off about it.

And won't eat sandwhiches either.

Those are entirely reasonable comments which will be purposely misconstrued by the mental children inhabiting our sham republic.

He's just stating a fundamental principle of insurance.

Too bad Obamacare outlawed health insurance.
