According to the people at my job's health fair I'm obese. I'm 6'0 and 200 lbs

and people tell me I need to gain weight.

Take heart, America. It's happening in England, too.

The most depressing series I ever saw on TV was Jamie Oliver, UK chef, trying for a month to change the eating habits of the 'fattest city in the US' ..it was a small town in Tenn.
Everyone in the town was fat because all they ate was junk food. He interviewed the town doctor who said 'These parents are condemning their children to a life span 20 years short of the average life.

Get that kid outside to play.

quote:No kidding. When I was growing up a long time ago, we would eat breakfast play baseball in 90+ degree heat until lunch and then go back out a play until dark. If not baseball, it was some outdoor activity (activity being the operative word). Now it's eat, play video games until it's more eating and then more video games.
Get that kid outside to play.

Lay off the sugar and gluten. That's my advice. High fat, high protein diets are the way to go.
Especially if you can't exercise due to work, life, etc.

Laziness, lack of pride, and I would imagine there is some correlation to income level but that's just speculation on my part.

How about we get rid of government subsidies for the poor & require people to pay for their own healthcare instead?

Good way to die of a coronary. The healthiest diet is a raw plant based diet.

You're both wrong.
High fat protein is bad. Low fat protein is good.
Plant based can be bad. Fruits are plants and they are very high in empty calories. Vegetables are great but they lack the trace minerals needed for bone/muscle health.

it seems like the concept of balance is completely lost in today's diet culture
eat nothing but plants!
no carbs, ever!
only high fat and protein!

There are fruitarians out there who do well. Certainly no fatties among them. I don't think it's the best way to live, though. I think you do miss key nutrients.

Vitamin B-12 is the only thing they lack and they lack it because our world has become too sterile. "Cavemen" got B12 from eating dirty plants out of the ground and/or drinking dirty stream water. Nowadays we have chlorine in water which kills everything (including B12). We don't get cholera anymore, though, so it's a trade-off I'll take.

Part of this is learned behaviors. Try eliminating carbs, grains, and sugars as a lifestyle change and then get back to us.
Then what am I supposed to eat?

It's been proven that people have reversed heart disease simply by going to a plant based diet.
Raw is the best of course because you aren't killing the nutrients...but just getting away from Cow including milk can do wonders.

quote:Don't know your situation but the DASH diet is a healthy way to lose weight and lower blood pressure. You could do a short term high protein Adkins or other similar programs but I don't like them as a long term but DASH can become a way of life. Takes a lot of thought and planning but if you follow it, it works.
