10 years ago I met a German college student studying in the U.S. He looked Asian.
Me: Were you born in Germany?
Him: Yes and I'm a German citizen.
Me: You speak German?
Him: Fluently.
Me: In Germany do they refer to you as a German?
Him: No. I'm called a Singaporean.
Me: In America you would be called an American.
Him: Yes. But you are the only country like that.

What a weird set of questions

Seeing as this is a political board, to not also discuss race would be effectively burying our heads in the sand.

1. When was this board or its most prominant demographic ever not obsessed with race? Like in US history.

2. I don't know what the hell I'd call your treatment of the subject of race, but "discussion" is a pretty generous term for what goes on here. You sure do bring it up a lot, though.

This country is obsessed with race. But on the flip side, I think we are probably one of the less racist countries in the world.

You can definately say that. Observe how eastern european gypsies are treated in Italy if you want to see real racism

On a daily basis, we are told how racist we are.

The guy looked as German as Obama. His parents were both born and raised in Singapore. They immigrated to Germany just before he was born. His parents don't speak German and are not German citizens.

The real question should be by what standard is America judged to be a racist nation?

I'm pretty sure Germany rarely grants citizenship to immigrants (like their Turkish population).

I believe that Alberto Fujimori, the former President of Peru, is the only other example of a racial/ethnic minority being elected the head of state of a democracy, but I don't think that Japanese were historically oppressed in Peru like Blacks were in this country. I would guess that many countries have had minorities in the cabinet.

Correct. And things are getting worse there with Muslim immigrants.

But the point this student was making is that Germany is just as race obsessed as the U.S. if not more so. We're just not living in other countries where we can see it.

Example...in the U.S. it is not allowed to use the 'n' word. All countries have racial slurs for different ethnic groups. The funniest I've heard is White South Africans referring to Black South Africans as 'AFI's. AFI = Antique Farm Implement.

Is there any other country that compares to the U.S.?
NZ had a Maori Cabinet minister who was also interim PM (twice) over a hundred years ago. LINK

That's not surprising. New Zeland seems to be pretty diverse. 65% European though.

There's one.

Dude, there are plenty

Without Google or Wikipedia, I can tell you that Benito Juarez was a full-blooded Indio, Alberto Fujimori was Japanese, Benjamin Disraeli and Leon Blum were Jewish (Disraeli was Anglican but ethnically Jewish and they definitely weren't considered white in his time), and Manmohan Singh is Sikh. This is hewing solely to rulers and not going into cabinet-level positions (even the friggin' Confederacy had Judah P!)

I would open a tab to the above-mentioned reference sites and list a dozen more examples but you seem to have the conclusion you want in mind already so I'm pretty sure you will either move the goalposts or stop posting.

Yeah I get it but it sure in the hell isn't painfully obvious. You definitely have to dig here and the common denominator here is European based people. Canada, U.S. New Zeland, Australia are by far away the most accepting people.

Now, I'm not talking in past history.

They know what he means...but it's easier to nitpick at his poor wording (it was poor) than to actually address his point.

The issue isn't really racism, but group bias. Race is just one of many ways people are grouped together for good or for bad. Some like or hate others based on race, gender, religion, sports fandom, what TV shows they watch, or any other shallow reason that makes people focus on differences or similarities.

Even if everyone was suddenly "color blind" (won't happen), there would be some other reason why people discriminate or treat others differently.
