This is not about me. I am happily employed.

But the article about Black families has convinced me to bring up another issue. I really do believe that affirmative action is not the problem you all think it is. It was never about putting people into positions they did not earn. I look forward to your responses and critiques, because maybe I can use this to improve myself and help someone else.

PSA: The unemployment rate is a critical way to gauge the status of various groups in the labor market. The unemployment rate measures the share of available job seekers who are unable to find a job out of the entire labor force.

quote:

Why is this? Many people point to education as a major cause of this disparity. A higher percentage of white Americans obtain college degrees: 41 percent, compared to the black population’s 22 percent. But data from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) show that differences in education can’t explain fully the entirety of the unemployment gap. According to research from Valerie Wilson, an economist at EPI, for black Americans with the same level of education level as white Americans, the unemployment rate is consistently nearly twice as high.

quote:

For every level of educational attainment, black Americans have unemployment rates that are similar to or higher than those of less educated white Americans. For instance, white Americans who only obtained a high-school diploma have a very similar unemployment rate to black Americans who completed at least a college education: 4.6 percent vs 4.1 percent. “This disparity suggests a race penalty whereby blacks at each level of education have unemployment rates that are the same as or higher than less educated whites,” writes Wilson.

I know I am going to get alot of push-back from posting this, so I will at least put down some other arguments.

1. The study does not directly control for the type of universities.

2. More importantly, what you actually majored in for college does play a role for the type of jobs you can get.

3. Welfare disparity would prevent people from seeking low wage employment. Blacks are disproportionately represented and a large number of whites are on it as well.

4. Connections and family legacy play a crucial role in modern hiring practices, particularly in small businesses. More whites have family connections or friendships than their black peers.

5.Also, not all jobs are created equal, and it could argued that whites are more willing to take more blue collar jobs (often more labor intensive)

This last chart is from 2011, and it did control for other factors such as age, education, and economic conditions.

Why use the welfare chart? I don't think it's favorable to your argument.

There's no easy answer to this as the culture (not culcha) in America has changed. People are seemingly A-OK with generational poverty, with devaluing education, with devaluing the traditional family unit, with devaluing a "can-do" attitude.

If you don't value the above do you value much of anything of worth?

How do you account for all those things in a chart, graph or research study accurately?

There's a lot in there so I'm not gonna talk about everything, but I'm confused at the inclusion at this graph.

Are you attempting to say that there should be more unemployed caucasians based on this data, or that their are a disproportionate amount of african-american SNAP users in comparison to their population?

The powers that be replaced working class blacks (and whites) with illegal immigrants. Black people are still too daft to realize that illegal immigration hurts them. The black community is just so blindly loyal to anything and everything their white liberal masters tell them. It's very sad and unfortunate.

The purpose was to illustrate that their is a large percentage of whites who are economically struggling and rely on some form of government assistance. It is not only blacks who are using food stamps.

Spot on. This is a result of short-sighted politics by Democrats making border control a lax issue.

The states with the highest percentage of citizens on welfare don't appear to be associated with the states with the states with the most illegal immigrants.

You could not be more wrong. The current police chief of Shreveport had the lowest score of the 12 applicants on the intelligence test. He got the job because he's black. He's doing a horrible job because he's a moron.

I was denied one job and 3 promotions because I am white. All of the blacks promoted ahead of me failed miserably.

Dr. Chavous killed a woman doing liposuction (Bakke case) because he was too stupid to enter Med school. But he was black.

Black unemployment is due to lack of motivation. One study by Heritage Foundation found that a single black mother of one in New York could get welfare and in kind payments that equaled a job of 20/hr per 40 hour work week. If you are illiterate what kind of job can you get that beats 20/hr? None. So, it makes perfect sense to stay on welfare all your life.

The only upside to dropping welfare and working for the same money is modeling for your kids. Showing them that getting up in the morning and going to work is normal behavior. That's why black unemployment is cyclical.

So is the entitlement money less for us white folks, or are you just assuming that most white people have motivation where blacks don't?

There are certainly people of all races struggling. The chart is misleading though.

In Alabama's 1st Congressional district:

43% of SNAP households are white. But only 25.3% of white households use SNAP.

51.9% of SNAP households are black. But only 21.8% of black households DON'T use SNAP. So nearly 80% of black households are using SNAP.

It looks like there is some support for your hypothesis, though I doubt it accounts for the whole thing.

Well of course not. Every measurable body of people is going to have it's high performers and it's low performers. But when caucasians have 77% of the population and 40% of the food stamp users while african americans have 13% of the population and 26% of the foodstamps what's the larger issue to be solved?

It was not in the newspapers. It was given to the applicants and one of them shared it with me. If you heard him in radio or TV interviews you'd put his IQ at about 85. The mayor of Shreveport who made the selection is also incredibly stupid. I've talked with her at least 4 or 5 times in my life and I'd put her IQ at no higher than 90.

i'd imagine criminal records/felonies are the biggest factor in the differences

Once you consider race as an objective value to be scored, you've done exactly this - the opposite of what Dr. King was suggesting.

Now - let me describe for you a situation I can support:

When I went to LSU Law School, we had a hardline, objective index - 20x your undergraduate GPA plus your LSAT. They set the index to accommodate 300 incoming students into 4 75-person sections. No interview, no "volunteer" work review, no gender, no international points - nada.

Now - the minority outreach was a different program. If you were within range of the index (ETA: And a member of an identified, disadvantaged minority group - for Louisiana, these were predominantly African American students) - I think it may have been 2 points, but perhaps as many as 5 - you got a "play in" chance. This was a pre-1L summer program where you could take a legal research and writing class for a grade. Depending on the grade, you could earn admission to the incoming 1L class (because of inevitable attrition there were always early casualties and the administration was committed to creating as many extra spots as needed to facilitate the successful summer program students).

That's a hand up. That's a valid exercise of "affirmative action." That's not taking a seat from a qualified white or Asian student and giving it to an unqualified black or Hispanic student, respectfully, IMHO, which is what most AA programs are.

Affirmative Action does much more harm than good.

Check out the problem of "mismatching".

If a white person is illiterate and has a child and no husband and gets the same deal then she is perfectly rational to accept the welfare lifestyle. It's logical, as I said.

Why a higher percentage of black females choose this option vis-a-vis white females is probably due to marriage possibilities.

I've known a lot of educated black women who told me that the market place does not favor them. IE, stupid but attractive white women are in more demand than intelligent black women. The black women realize this early on and don't have the same goals of getting married and then having children.

Dr. Sowell has been all over this for years. He did a comparison of "Sons of Harvard" and Harvard's minority AA program.

Turns out that those results are the same and what you would expect - putting people in Harvard when they don't belong there (whether because their father went there or there is a perceived lack of brown/black students), they fail at much higher rates than the folks that belong there.

Wow. Shocking, I know.
