I've never understood the obsession with bread. I'd be stocking up on stuff that requires refrigeration because I can just set it outside during the snow storm. Then cook it over the fire place.

The only place I head to pre-storm is the tobacco store. Red Seal is a gottahave around here. Don't have to share that with the wife.

What about one inch?
Do you realize the amount of equipment needed to salt the hundreds of miles of elevated overpasses/bridges in LA just to take care of 1 inch of ice? That same amount of equipment could probably handle 10-15 inches of snow yearly.

How many miles can 1 loaded salt truck cover? I don't know. Just think about the amount of equipment needed to just salt the basin bridge. 20+ miles of 4 lane road, or 80 total miles for one truck. How many trucks would be needed and how much salt would it take?

Same thing happened when I was in S Carolina, they bought up everything they could drag home.

Governor Jindal: 3.8 million pounds of salt to be used on icy roads

They finally figured that salting roads is a good idea!

when jindal called for a state of emergency (thursday?) doesn't that authorize for federal assistance?

I think the assistance is more financial reimbursement than it is logistical help.

3.8 million pounds, hmmm.....where did it come from? The states up here order it months in advance anticipating the upcoming winter.

LA people better wash their cars/undercarriages in a few days and not let the salt frick them up

But seriously, even in Iowa they shut down the highways all the time for icy/snowy conditions.

There is really no way to drive safely on icy roads...it will always be a risk. Snow is easier to deal with, but with the retards driving in Louisiana there would be cars in ditches with that too no doubt.

Maybe it helps to have several massive salt domes dotting your coast.

Just have someone rent 5 salt trucks and we wouldn't have to cancel everything

Louisiana probably doesn't have the equipment to treat the roads. Here in Tennesse there are large metal sheds full of salt along the Interstate Hwys when Winter comes. Prior to a winter storm they treat the roads. If it snows, the main roads are plowed first, then the secondary roads.
How often does Louisiana need snow removal equipment?

There has to be a way to rent or borrow salt trucks. When hurricanes hit hundreds of tree crews from all over the country come but not much come when snow is involved. Yes I know there is a reason but of the gov just fork out a small portion of money we would handle this better

Louisiana is as concerned with preparing for ice storms as Chicago is with preparing for hurricane season.

A company in Fl was waiting for material from CA which was in a truck parked on I10, since time was critical they re-ordered from a East coast supplier. Multiply this times thousands and you have a major disruption in commerce.

sounds like they didnt plan appropriately if they couldnt wait 2 more days for the equipment. rushing equipment, no matter the cost, isnt worth people getting killed on the road.

Not how this works. Jindal declared a State of Emergency for the State of Louisiana. It provides State assistance (National Guard, LADOT, etc.) to local municipalities. It is only when those resources are overwhelmed that the Governor can request Federal Assistance (money and resources) via a request for a Presidentially Declared Disaster. Jindal didnt do that last week, and he has yet to do it this week.

Even if he does, the Feds dont just send down the "Federal Icing Squadron"...it just allows the state to spend as much as they need to do it effectively themselves and the state gets reiumbursed for it.
