Shutting down I10 which is a major east west artery is not a minor inconvenience. In just a few situations that I know about there were millions of dollars in business losses. A company in Fl was waiting for material from CA which was in a truck parked on I10, since time was critical they re-ordered from a East coast supplier. Multiply this times thousands and you have a major disruption in commerce. It may only happen every ten years, but it is going to happen, and it is a much bigger deal than people in Baton Rouge not being able to go to Walmart for a day or two.

That may be true, but BR and LA's concern isn't interstate commerce, and having a bunch of equipment that gets used once every five years isn't cost-effective.

Terrible analogy
Chicago spends money to combat the most logical natural disaster for their region. Which would be blizzard winter conditions. The gulf coast region does more to prepare for hurricanes.

If the gulf coast area had the same amount of snow equipment as Chicago, citizens would be jumping up and down about wasteful government spending.

Because it would be a massive waste of money.

This has been an odd winter of freezing in La. You guys in the South are getting snow, ice, bad roads. Up here in Shreveport our temps have been just as bad or worse but the roads have been bone dry...even bridges and overpasses when the temp is in the teens.

What fricktard thinks Chicago has ANY potential to get a god damned hurricane?

That's the stupidest shite I've read on the poli board in some time

Good point

My point is that the government officials who are in charge of this crap are completely inept

There were only a few key areas where they would have needed to set up choke points on the interstate. That area of the I-10 corridor needs to remain open. and it can with a little planning and preparation.

You totally missed the point. Each region of the country is prepared for the MOST likely natural disaster to hit the region. Chicago being prepared for a hurricane would in fact be stupid. Just like New Orleans having enough equipment to deal with 30+inches of annual snowfall would be stupid.

Set up barricades and light message stations near the overpass areas for people to go extremely slow.

The problem is that people want to go 85mph on I-10 in icy conditions. And on the highways as well.

They needed more police presence out there directing traffic. It was a minimal amount of ice where the salt granules would have helped alleviate that.

People down here are clueless and don't have any idea as to what they are doing in 30 degree weather. It's crazy.

You'd think maybe the local government officials would coordinate with some northern states government for advice etc

Tomorrow and Wednesday will be an utter failure again

This is why you keep them off the road.

How often do we get this type of weather that shuts down the interstate? Not often enough to warrant spending money to remedy it.

I had zero issue getting across town TO work, and it was like a 45 minute drive on airline/jefferson home. Not ideal, but not outrageous (I've seen worse on a normal good weather Friday).

I understand there are much larger issues at hand than me getting to and from work, but for one or two days every half decade, it doesn't make sense to spend the money.

Up here to your neighbor to the north that means two days before the "supposed" storm hits, everybody runs out to the store to buy up all the bread and milk they can afford, whether needed or not. Of course then the storm either moves down into La. or up into Mo.

Damnest thing I've ever seen.
