Russia plotted to assassinate the prime minister of a European nation and overthrow its government last year, according to senior Whitehall sources.
An election-day coup plot to attack Montenegro’s parliament and kill the pro-Western leader was directed by Russian intelligence officers with the support and blessing of Moscow, to sabotage the country’s plan to join Nato.
The plot was foiled only hours before it was due to be carried out, but would have caused heavy bloodshed and plunged the tiny country into turmoil on the eve of becoming Nato’s 29th member.

Vlad is just trying to catch up to our spooks' glorious record of overthrowing governments.

Wait I thought even joking about an assassination was an offense worthy of jail time? At least that's what the politards told me a couple days ago

We killed Sadam, Kadafi and are actively trying to kill Asad all over oil. You think our leaders have no blood on their hands?
Normal, everyday Americans are led to the slaughter for fricking oil tycoons and you want to fight a left/right agenda.
Muh bathrooms
God damned idiot.

The entire population of Montengro is smaller than the populations of Oklahoma City, Portland, Nashville, Las Vegas, etc etc
Why would anyone spend a second on this?
What would the "heavy bloodshed" even be. There wouldnt have been any...

Glad the United States has never engaged in anything like that.

Yes American meddling and Russian meddling are exactly the same with the same world view.

So what basically more Europeans expecting us to defend them without being able to pay their fair share?
Would have been better to let Putin have them.

Whitehall is just confirming what everyone already knew about the events of last October.
As for the responses in this thread, it's sad that so many ignorant people have allowed themselves to be duped into common, populist, low-IQ anti-American propaganda. You get the impression that most people wish the U.S. would have never engaged the opposition during the Cold War.
As for Montenegro, the strategic interests here obviously revolve around Serbia, and whether it can be brought into the fold of normal civilized nations. The thinking goes, if Putin can destabilize Montenegro, then he can also destabilize Bosnia and Kosovo, and he can bring Serbia back into the corrupt Russian international crime syndicate the same way he did with Ukraine after the Orange Revolution of 2004-05.
Of course it goes beyond the Balkans as well. If Putin can discredit the EU and NATO, then he can--and he will--destabilize Moldova, Transnistria, and Romania, next, and then will likely antagonize the Baltics. The "stans" in Central Asia will also be targeted. It's always best to nip this kind of crap in the bud before it starts spinning out of control.
So good for Montenegro for fending off this crap in October, and good for Montenegro for helping to bring Serbia and the Balkans closer into the Western European fold.
