As a 5 year old I knew it wasnt wise to call the Native ameircan that came speak to us a Redskin. Maybe i was just really smart
Maybe you were.
I knew as a 5-year-old not to call somebody "stupid." I wouldn't have been shocked if I heard the word "stupid" on TV, just like I wouldn't have been, and am still not shocked, if I hear an announcer say Washington Redskins. As a five-year-old I have been shocked if I heard the "N-Word" on TV, regardless of the context. My point is that you and I are writing the word Redskin in our posts, yet neither of us will actually write out the N-Word. Seems that if they were equivalent, you and I would not write it out. That doesn't mean it's not derogatory, but it doesn't mean it's an equivalent.

What kind of household did you live in where you heard and understood the term Redskin at the advanced age of 5?

Fair enough.
My problem is that there are some people that either ignore an issue altogetherr (e.g., politicians) or don't have the ability to identify an important issue until it's popular. When it gets popular then, they act like it's been their stance for years, and then vilify anybody who is now confused or put-off by this new "outrage." I just have trouble respecting the the moral stance of individuals who are at the will of the populists' stance. If they think something is offensive, then they should stand up for it; don't jump on the bandwagon and tout their moral superiority after the fact.

The name was originally created in Boston when the team was located there. It was a play to market the team with the Red Sox and became the Red Skins.
They eventually merged the name and moved to Washington DC where no one had any issues until the country moved into the PC era where liberals, men who are betas and bored housewives became championing causes.

So, because SOME native Americans are not offended that makes it OK?
sure was lots of Redskins fans in AZ yesterday

While some Native Americans might not like the term Redskins, there are evidently many who do.
The NCAA tried being PC about the same issue. The Seminoles of Florida AND Oklahoma said they both liked FSU's name.
One of the Chiefs of the Ute people was a Utah football season ticket holder.
Illinois had to get rid of Chief Illiniwek...despite there being no Illini left. The closest living ancestors of the Illini have flip-flopped with their stance on the name.
I'm not opposed to changing names if they are universally considered offensive, but don't force it if the minority in question is divided on the issue.

Well, seems like the ENTIRE Navajo Nation is alright with it.
Actually Ben Shelly lost the primary election, so he won't be reelected and will be out of office by January. So, the OP should read "Lame Duck President of Navajo Nation w/ Dan Snyder"

I am a direct descendent of Pochohantas as well as Chief Motosbuba and several other unnamed Cherokees.
I am not offended by the name Redskins.
In fact about the only thing that offends me is the constant sniveling of the PC police whose only joy in life seems to be looking for things to be offended about.
