I'll ask here again to see if I can get a response? Is the term redskin racist or derogatory?

The reason I ask is I thought it was deemed racist, but the Indian leaders on that John Stewart segment claimed it was offensive because a red skin was a scalp of an Indian that was taken as a trophy. So which is it?

It was also a scalp of a white man that was taken as a trophy. We're all the same underneath the skin.

In all fairness, I would be completely cool with the name if I had those seats

It's neither. And arguing about the level of offensiveness which results from the term is missing the point.
"Redskin" is a stereotype and we as a society should reject stereotypes because they are intellectually lazy. They also can create cultural boundaries which make an accurate understanding of a culture impossible or, at minimum, much more difficult. "Redskins" should offend our intellect not our feelings.

yes, it is derogatory. It has a history the same as the n word. Started off as just a way to describe a certain group of people, then somewhere alond the way it transformed into a demeaning and derogatory term. It is absolute horseshite if the govt or anyone else forces them tochange the name, but to act like Redskins isnt considered derogatory is lying to help their opinion.

it is a derogatory term. I agree they shouldn't change or be forced to change the name though.

I am part native indian on my mom's side. The name of the Washington Redskins is a honor to a proud tough people. I don't know anyone who is offended. This was created by white liberals who are trying to tear the country apart and reshape it in their own way.

I'm still trying to figure where most of these individuals that are "extremely" offended were in the past. I know there have been some individuals that have been fighting the name for years; I respect those people that maintain a moral stance, regardless of the popularity of it. I have more trouble respecting people who fight for a cause only after it becomes the "popular" thing to do, especially when they had the opportunity to fight for it when it was less popular. If they believe something is morally and objectively wrong, then stand up for it; don't wait until it's become the "thing" to do. It makes me second guess their moral fortitude or worse yet, makes me think their morals are determined by the populists' stance.

Let's ask Fauxchahontas. I'm sure she thinks that she's an expert on the issue.

I see why it is derogatory, but it also seems like it is a false equivalence to the N-word. First of all, I am, and everybody else, will write "N-Word" instead of writing it out. We have known for decades, how hateful the word is. That being said, I used to sit down on Superbowl Sunday and watch Steve Sabol present the highlights of past Superbowls which included many played by the Washington Redskins. Not once did anybody tell me how derogatory the term was, yet I knew how derogatory the N-word was as young child. If there is a true equivalence that would have been obvious to many, then those that failed to speak for years and years, when it was obvious to them, seem to lack the moral fortitude to criticize anybody today. Again, those that stood up when it wasn't popular have my utmost respect.

No, because the name Redskins didn't cause any controversy until recently with the invention of political correctness and the country went full retard.
