A historic piece of legislation in Philadelphia is putting the brakes on police pulling over drivers for minor infractions.
The city council passed a bill that bans traffic stops for minor violations, such as having a broken taillight or not having certain stickers displayed. Drivers who are guilty of those minor violations will instead receive a warning or a citation in the mail.
“So that an expired license plate or fuzzy dice in the mirror isn’t a death sentence that it can be in some cases,” said Councilmember Curtis Jones Jr., who is a co-sponsor of the Driving Equality Bill.

im not really opposed to this
most traffic stops were just made up BS as an excuse to do illegal searches based on nothing you did any way.
if its perfectly ok to steal $800 and thats fine, you wont be charged or arrested, then why the frick are they even writing traffic tickets any more? put an end to cops seeing drivers as a source of revenue to be exploited

Will they complain about higher taxes there soon?
Less revenue on traffic stops, gotta make that moolah up somehow.

Silly Philly!
I had the displeasure of spending a week in Philly on business...awful place, period. You can smell the corruption in the air!

What happens when the warnings and citations are ignored?

This will definitely help....criminals

I love this as a common sense approach. Reallocate the resources to a better use of their time than harassing people over minor items.

Then a warrant would be issued and it's a bigger problem than a minor violation...

Yup. Then the guys who owns $5k in fines decides to not comply when a Leo gets sent to collect. Guy gets killed and left goes nuts

The same thing that happens now I guess.

I like this.
No harm - No foul.

I support this.
They become nothing more than a vehicle for pretextual stops. I don't know why Americans have ever been OK with having traffic cops on corners creeping around trying to steal $50 from us the first time we sneeze and cross the center line.

In Philly they barely pay attention to traffic lights. I have no idea where all of these traffic stops for minor infractions are happening.

No matter where we are talking about in the nation, traffic stops have exactly zero to do with pushing traffic safety.
They are all done for a combination of revenue and pretextual reasons. The road is the one place Americans have somehow decided that they're OK with cops just randomly demanding identification, questioning us, and often, searching us. We just call it "not random" because as even the Supreme Court noted............if you follow anyone for even a little bit, they are destined to violate some traffic law.

Most all minor traffic violations I've watched on Cops, or have experienced personally (I work odd hours and am on the road a lot of weekends nights/early morning) are you cull individuals with warrants or who may be driving under the influence. Ive never had more than a warning for a light out or failure to signal.

I wish they would continue to pull people over for expired tags (and busted headlights etc) and while they are pulled over check the insurance they are required to have. No insurance and car gets towed until owner can show 6 months insurance paid in full and non refundable.
I hate these assholes who drive around with no insurance, hit someone and face no repercussions.

Thats bullshite too. If someone breaks the law they should be punished (or fined). Giving people a free pass only leads to more people doing that shite.

you realize this is no free pass?? people are still going to face consequence. Fines are just mailed and dont involve being physically detained.
but yea if you want to be dramatic this is lawlessness in pure form for just blatantly allowing wrong colored stickers!!
