The Pentagon is considering pulling out of a deal it made with thousands of noncitizen recruits with specialized skills: Join the military and we'll put you on the fast track to citizenship.

The proposal to dismantle the program would cancel enlistment contracts for many of the foreign-born recruits, leaving about 1,000 of them without legal protection from deportation.

The plan under consideration is laid out in a memo from Pentagon officials to Defense Secretary James Mattis. In the memo, obtained by NPR, high-level personnel and intelligence officials cite security concerns and inadequate vetting of recruits under a program called Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest, or MAVNI.

The memo also cites "the potential threat posed by individuals who may have a higher risk of connections to Foreign Intelligence Services," and it refers to an "elevated" risk of an insider threat.

I don't mind this program, but I also won't mind if they cancel it.

Why does program even exist? I mean, I generally trust my fellow man and think people are generally good but damn, become a citizen first. This is the military we are talking about.

If you're willing to put your arse on the line for a country that you're not even from, I think that's pretty admirable.

The risk however is:

That's my point.

It was a big factor in 09L recruitment.

I've met a couple of people who have gone this route of enlisting in the military to become American citizens and they were both appreciative of the chance to serve this country and to become citizens. You tend to appreciate things more if you have to work for them as opposed to having it given to you I find.

The way I understand it, they are not translators. They are your average Soldier but since they do not qualify for a security clearance, they are usually fielders, etc.

Way back in 1988 I had the pleasure of seeing a person gain citizenship at Mount Rushmore, he earned it. If there are problems with the current program fix it, it isn't in our country's best interest to kill it.

They get paid and compensation just like the rest of the military. The difference is that they get citizenship at the end of their gig.

What is a fielder? Also, I've known some of these guys to have clearances. All the guys I worked with from this program were great soldiers (mostly Filipino), but I have no problem getting rid of the program as long as no one gets left in the lurch.
